CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) honors eight spring athletes from five different institutions.
Baseball Athlete of the Week - Dane Cala, Brockport
(Sr, OF - , 8)
Cala was instrumental in Brockort's 3-2 week which included a series win over the weekend against Cortland. The senior went 8-for-22 from the plate (.364), and crossed the plate six times. He's now scored 21 runs on the season, which is tied for third in the conference. He also drove in four runs during the week, including two in Saturday afternoons 5-4 win. In Sunday's series finale, he went 3-for-6 from the plate and accounted for three of Brockport's eight runs in the 8-7 victory. The Derby, N.Y. native was perfect in the field, making 13 putouts and adding an assist when he threw out a runner trying to score from center field.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Alex Weingarten, Cortland
(Sr, P - East Rockaway, N.Y., 2)
Weingarten was dominant in Cortland's 4-1 win Sunday vs. Brockport. He threw a complete-game two-hitter in the seven-inning contest with five strikeouts, no walks, and one run allowed. Weingarten retired the side in order in six of his seven innings to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Softball Athlete of the Week - Jackie Decker, Plattsburgh
(Jr, C/3B - Adams, N.Y., 18)
Plattsburgh State junior third baseman/catcher Jackie Decker batted .889 (8-for-9) with six RBI in the Cardinals' SUNYAC-opening sweep of SUNY Oneonta on Sunday. Decker hit 4-for-4 in game one of the series with two RBI, helping Plattsburgh State win, 9-7, and in game two, she batted 4-for-5 with four RBI in a 14-12 Cardinal victory.
Softball Pitcher of the Week - Alexandrea Flint, Cortland
(Sr, P - Dalton, N.Y., 11)
Flint posted a 2-0 record and 0-0 ERA in two Cortland home SUNYAC wins over the weekend. In 11 total innings she allowed only eight hits and two walks, struck out seven, and permitted just one unearned run. Flint tossed a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts in a 9-0, five-inning win over Buffalo State, and she threw six innings of five-hit ball with three strikeouts and one unearned run allowed in a 9-1, six-inning win versus Fredonia.
Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week - Devin Phelps, Cortland
(Jr, Attack - Chittenango, NY, 22)
Phelps helped the Red Dragons improve to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the SUNYAC in a pair of wins last week, scoring eight points on two goals and six assists, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers. In a 12-11 home overtime win versus #3 Ithaca, Phelps tallied three assists and collected four ground balls. In an 11-10 overtime victory at Oneonta on Saturday, Phelps scored five points on two goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal with one second remaining in overtime. He leads Cortland in scoring with 35 points on 14 goals and a team-best 21 assists.
Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week - Andrew Helfman, Oneonta
(So, G - Moorestown, NJ, 18)
Helfman tallied 33 saves in two one-point decision games last week. Saturday against No. 9 Cortland, Helfman posted a career best 20 saves in a tough 11-10 loss in overtime.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Nicole Burrows, Fredonia
(Jr, GK - Baldwinsville, N.Y., 00)
Burrows stopped 64.1 percent of all shots she faced this week. Her 20 saves vs. Nazareth ties a single-game school record. Burrows had five saves in a 13-1 conference win against Potsdam.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Katie Flannery, Oneonta
(Sr, Attack - Massapequa, NY, 18)
In a 2-0 week for the Red Dragons, Flannery led the team with 13 total points. She had a career best nine points in an 18-6 win against Hartwick and then registered four points in a conference opening victory against Geneseo.
