Cortland, N.Y. - For the second week in a row the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected an overtime thriller between Geneseo and Oneonta as its game of the week. This week however, featured the women's soccer game on September 29, where the nationally ninth ranked Knights defeated the Red Dragons, 3-2, in extra time.
The scoring started in the 27th minute when the women's soccer SUNYAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, Audrey Reid, converted on a penalty kick to give Geneseo a 1-0 lead. Minutes later, in the 29th, Geneseo's Reid stretched the lead to 2-0 as she booted a corner kick from the left side and bent it toward the near post of the goal, netting the ball right over the hands of the Oneonta goalkeeper, Emilie Mull.
Right before halftime Oneonta senior midfielder, Laura Rolston, cleaned up a scramble in front of the Geneseo net and scored in the 42nd minute to keep the game close at 2-1 in favor of the Knights. The only goal of the second half came off some crafty passing and ball movement from the Red Dragons as junior midfielder, Seaver Lipshie, sent the ball toward the six yard box and found teammate, Julie Steinhauer, who scored to tie the game up at 2-2 in the 53rd minute.
With two goals already in the game, Reid saw a chance to complete her first career hat trick in the 60th minute on a penalty kick that was eventually pushed just wide to the left. Regulation ended with the Geneseo and Oneonta tied at two goals apiece. Finally, in the 112th minute during the second overtime period, Reid completed the hat trick on a free kick from about 25 yards out, winning the game for Geneseo, 3-2.
This victory ties Geneseo's best start in program history with the 1994 team that also began their season 8-0-1 eventually advancing to the NCAA National semifinals. The Knights continue conference play when they head to Brockport this upcoming Saturday, October 7, looking to keep up the impressive start to their 2017 season.
