OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Intercollegiate Athletics Department has hired Jacob Smith as its next cross country head coach. Smith's hire is effective immediately, as he will begin prepping the 2019 men's and women's cross country teams for the upcoming fall slate.
With more than 10 years of coaching experience, Smith's latest position was the cross country head coach and strength and conditioning coordinator at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. In his year at the helm, Smith conducted all aspects of team administration including training, recruiting, logistics, budgeting, fundraising and social media. As the strength and conditioning coordinator, he created programs for every varsity team while teaching sports performance classes as well.
During his coaching career, Smith has spent time as an assistant at his alma mater, Bowling Green State University, as well as SUNYAC-foe Cortland, Christopher Newport University and Coe College.
Since graduating from Bowling Green with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science/psychology, Smith also was involved in areas outside of college coaching. He spent a year as a sport physiology intern with the United States Olympic Committee, stayed four years as a resident program coordinator and coach with USA Triathlon and was an associate instructor for undergraduate exercise physiology classes for one year at Indiana University.
While at Cortland as the assistant men's and women's track and field and cross country coach, Smith completed a Master of Science degree in exercise science.
Smith's certifications include USA Track & Field Level II (Distance Events) and Level I, National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Road Runners Club of America Coach and American College of Sports Medicine Personal Trainer.
Smith and the Lakers will begin their season in a few short weeks, starting at the Fredonia Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31.
