CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces the PrestoSports baseball weekly awards. Cortland's James Varian (Hopewell Junction, N.Y) has been named the PrestoSports Baseball Athlete of the Week and Brockport's Andrew Huffman (Kerhonkson, N.Y) has been named the PrestoSports Pitcher of the Week.
Varian batted .545 (6-for-11) with two doubles, six RBI and six runs scored in two non-league losses to Montclair State. He went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in an 15-10 loss in the opener and was 3-for-6 with a double, four RBI and two runs in an 11-10 loss in the nightcap. Varian hit an RBI single to bring Cortland within 10-8 in the eighth inning and hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 10-10 in the second game.
Junior pitcher Huffman, had another excellent start this weekend against SUNY Purchase. Huffman went five innings and struck out seven while surrendering three runs in gaining the win in game two of the doubleheader. Huffman now has a season ERA of a 4.22 while striking out 15 in 10.2 IP on the young season.
