CORTLAND, NY - Cortland captured the 2018 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's lacrosse title with a 19-5 win over third seeded Brockport. This is the Red Dragons 21st SUNYAC title.
Molly Newton got the Red Dragons off to a quick 1-0 lead in the opening minute of play with the first goal. Cortland kept the scoring surge going and had a 14-3 lead into halftime. Sophomore Lexie Meager lead the Red Dragons offense scoring four goals. Sophomore Brie Yonge totaled a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Junior Carly Stone also netted three goals. Senior Katie Wolfe and sophomores Baylee Ojeda and and senior Kristyn Drake scored two goals. Newton ended the day scoring two as well.
Freshman goalie Annie Casey made five saves. Junior Hailey Dobbins, the MVP of the tournament, registered five ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers.
Junior Sara Grapevine paced the Golden Eagles with one goal and one assist. Seniors Dana Kiselica and Samantha Dooling, juniors Heather Conklin, Victoria Thompson also contributed to the Brockport offense with a goal.
The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The SUNYAC honored Cortland's Jordynn Aiello as this year's women's lacrosse winner.
