SUNYAC announces 2018 baseball awards
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) proudly announces the recipients of this year's baseball awards. These awards include Player, Pitcher, Rookie, and Coach of the Year as well as All-Conference selections that are voted on by the coaches.
Bob Wallace Player of the Year -Mike Dellicarri, Oswego
Coming off his sophomore season where he appeared in 36 games and earned SUNYAC first team honors, the Oswego junior started in all 38 games this season for the 2018 SUNYAC Champions. He was also selected as SUNYAC Athlete of the Week twice. Dellicarri was solid at the plate, as he finished with a .372 batting average (55 -148), third best in the conference, and knocked six homeruns out of the park to earn him a .615 slugging percentage, both totals are second best in the conference. The Congers native also claimed 49 runs this season, as well as driving in 47 runs, both are the highest in the SUNYAC this season. The Lakers outfielder also performed well on the field, earning a .989 fielding percentage, while only having one error.
Don Axtell Pitcher of the Year - Mike Harrington, Cortland
In his last year of collegiate play, The Red Dragons Ace did not disappoint on the mound. Harrington appeared in 12 games this season for Cortland and was selected as the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week three times, which is the highest amount this season. Harrington led all pitchers with eight wins and zero losses to his name to command a 1.46 ERA, the second best average in the conference. The senior pitcher had an impressive week heading into the SUNYAC tournament play, as he complied two complete shutouts against New Paltz on April 21 and then against the 2018 SUNYAC Champions Oswego on April 27. Harrington also performed well in the postseason to earn him a place on the 2018 SUNYAC Baseball All-Tournament Team.
Clark V. Whited Rookie of the Year - Antonio Pragana, Cortland
As a newcomer to a consistently nationally-ranked program, Pragana transitioned into his new home smoothly. The John Jay graduate made solid contributions for the Red Dragons all season appearing in 39 games, finishing with a .433 batting average (league-best) and a .500 on-base percentage (second best in the league) in conference play. Overall, Pragana ended his rookie season with 43 hits, while also scoring 33 runs, both league-best amongst conference rookies. Pragana had an exceptional showing in a win against Brockport with a perfect 1.000 batting average (5-5) and two RBI. On the defensive end, the freshman outfielder performed well, only having one error all season.
Walter Nitardy Coach of the Year - Arlan Freeman, New Paltz
In his second year with New Paltz, Freeman led the Hawks to their second consecutive playoff appearance after finishing the season with a 9-8 conference record and 17-18 overall. New Paltz finished the regular season third in the conference standings, and third in the 2018 SUNYAC baseball tournament. Freeman helped guide one of his players to a 2018 All-Tournament team selection, and four others to All-Conference nods.
