Geneseo Women's Basketball Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament
GENESEO, N.Y. - The SUNY Geneseo women's basketball team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, announced Monday. The Knights will face FDU-Florham in the first round this Friday, March 4, at Stevens Insitute (N.J.) with the winner advancing to play either the host Ducks or Old Westbury.
Making its second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, Geneseo is facing the same team who eliminated it a season ago. As hosts of the first two rounds last year, the Knights took down Castleton, 84-40, and Muhlenburg, 69-54, before ultimately falling to FDU-Florham, 68-54, in the sectional semifinals at Tufts.
Head coach Scott Hemer owns a 3-2 record in the tournament while the program is 10-7 all-time. The team has advanced to the Elite Eight on two occasions, during the 1994-95 season, which saw Geneseo falling to Salem State, 76-65, and in 1992-93, when the team fell to Scranton, 79-70.
The Knights finished the regular season with a 20-7 record, including a 14-4 SUNYAC mark that secured the second seed for the postseason tournament. Following a 71-41 win over Fredonia in the semifinals, Geneseo fell to top-seeded New Paltz in the finals, 65-52.
