Brockport Men's Basketball Falls to Morrisville in Triple Overtime
BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Morrisville State rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to edge Brockport 83-80 in triple-overtime on Friday night, March 7, in the opening round of the NCAA III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament in Brockport, N.Y.
The Golden Eagles were led by Clifton Lyerly who scored 23 points, while Ben Caruthers added 13 before fouling out.
The loss eliminates the Golden Eagles from the NCAA III Tournament, while Morrisville State will take on Hobart on Saturday night, March 8, at Brockport in the second round. Hobart bounced Scranton 94-81 in the early game.
With score tied 80-80 thanks to a three-point bomb from Brockport's Bobby Bell, Morrisville State took the lead for good with 47.8 left in the third overtime period after a mad scramble for a rebound resulted in a conglomeration of players causing the ball to recoil up and into the net for an 82-80 advantage.
Brockport missed another shot and Morrisville State went to the line to convert 1 of 2 free throws, leaving the Golden Eagles with a desperation three-point attempt that went wide.
Behind a raucous crowd and a frenetic defense, Brockport erected a 36-18 first-half lead by shooting 46.4% (13 for 28) from the floor and employing an asphyxiating defense that forced nine Morrisville State turnovers, no three-pointers made in five attempts, and an anemic 28.6% field goal percentage (8 for 28).
But Morrisville chiseled away at the lead, sculpturing a comeback that saw the visitors go on a 23-8 run over the final seven minutes to force the first overtime session.
A seesaw overtime period ended with Morrisville State hitting a three-pointer to force a second overtime at 69-69.
The two teams went back and forth throughout the second overtime and wound up deadlocked at 77-77 to force the third overtime period where Morrisville State squeaked out the win.
