Lyons and Scozzie honored with Molnar and Bogard Awards
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) would like to congratulate Geneseo's Gordon Lyons and Cortland's Madeline Scozzie for being selected as the 2014-2015 Molnar and Bogard Award winners as voted on by the conference athletic directors.
The Dr. Sam Molnar and Dr. Dolores Bogard awards are presented by the conference each year to either a junior or senior athlete with the most outstanding combination of academic and athletic achievements. The recipients must have earned above a 3.3 grade point average and have received a varsity letter.
Lyons, a 2015 graduate who was a four year member of the Knights men's basketball team has been selected as the Dr. Sam Molnar award winner. Throughout eight semesters Lyons has accumulated a 3.77 grade point average while studying accounting. In the classroom he has earned multiple prestigious awards. These awards include the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence in 2015, four time SUNYAC All-Academic Team, Capital One Division III Academic All-American first team in 2015, second team in 2014, and the Chancellor's Scholar Athlete 2013 Men's Basketball. Lyons is also a member of the Geneseo Accounting Society Commissioner's List from 2013 to 2015, along with being a member in both Phi Eta Sigma and Beta Gamma Sigma.
Lyons has also excelled on the court, winning five different awards in 2015. These include NABC first team All-American, NABC East Region Player of the Year, SUNYAC Player of the Year, ECAC Division III Upstate Player of the year, and Rochester Press Radio Club Male Athlete of the Year. He has also been a member of the SUNYAC All-Conference first team in 2014 and 2015, along with being a member of the second team in 2013.
Geneseo's men's basketball coach Steve Minton said “On the court, Gordon is heard, hustle and basketball IQ are what separates him from other players. These factors helped us to win numerous games throughout his career and are intangibles every coach wishes their players possessed.”
Cortland's Madeline Scozzie, a member of the gymnastics team is the recipient of the Dr. Delores Bogard Award. Scozzie has accumulated a 3.95 grade point average while studying childhood education. In the classroom she has earned many high honors including, NACGC/W Scholar All-American in 2013, SUNYAC Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award Winner in 2014, Capital One Division III First-Team Academic All-American in 2015, and Academic All-District Team also in 2015. She was also a member of the Presidents list each year at Cortland.
Scozzie is well known for her talent on the uneven bars where she was a NCGA National Champion in 2015. In 2014 she earned multiple honors such as first team All-American (All-Around), All-ECAC team (All-Around), and All-ECAC team (Uneven Bars). Along with being a National Champion in the uneven bars in 2015, she also earned first team All-American (Uneven Bars), and All-NCGA East (All-Around).
Gary Babjack, the head coach of the women's gymnastics team, said Maddy is relentless in her pursuit of excellence. “Not only is she a great athlete, but also an incredible young women who understands and makes decisions to maintain a healthy balance in each facet of her life. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to work and perhaps influence such a wonderful person.”
The men's award is named after the late Dr. Sam Molnar, (who) was the Director of Athletics at the State University College at Potsdam for over thirty years. He also coached various sports during this period. He served as SUNYAC President during the 1962-63 and 1963-64 years.
The women's award is named after Dr. Dolores Bogard, who was an administrator and coach at SUNY Cortland for over twenty years. She served as SUNYAC President during the 1987-88 year.
