Red Dragons to Face WPI in NCAA Men's Basketball First Round Friday at Amherst
SUNY Cortland has earned a spot in the 62-team NCAA Div. III Men's Basketball tournament and will play Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the opening round on Friday, March 4, as part of a four-team regional hosted by Amherst College in Massachusetts.
The other first-round game at the regional will match Amherst versus Husson College. The two winners will play in the second round Saturday, also at Amherst. Game times and other regional details will be announced later.
The Red Dragons (20-7), under 21st-year head coach Tom Spanbauer, automatically qualified for the national tournament by winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title last Saturday with a thrilling 77-74 win over Oswego in Plattsburgh. Cortland claimed its seventh league title overall and second in four years.
Cortland will be making its sixth NCAA appearance and first since 2013. The Red Dragons advanced to the "sweet 16" in both 1999 and 2000, lost in the second round in 2006 and 2013, and fell in the first round in 1997. Cortland reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time, all under Spanbauer.
Cortland has never faced WPI, Amherst or Husson.
