Cortland, Plattsburgh collect weekly men's ice hockey awards
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Cortland sophomore forward Domenic Settimo has been named the SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week, while teammate Luca Durante has claimed the Goaltender of the Week honors and Plattsburgh freshman forward Colin Callanan earned Rookie of the Week accolades.
A native of East Meadow, NY, Settimo helped lead Cortland (12-7-1, 7-4 SUNYAC) to a 4-3 overtime victory at #10 Oswego on Friday, Jan. 27 - its first win on the road against the Lakers since Dec. 6, 1994, when current Detroit Red Wing head coach Derek Lalonde earned a 5-2 victory in goal.
Settimo recorded a goal and an assist, posted a +2 rating and won 10 face-offs. He assisted on Cortland's third goal at 10:40 of the second period and netted the game-winner 1:06 into overtime on a wraparound shot to secure the 4-3 win.
For the season, Settimo leads the Red Dragons with 20 points on a team-high 13 goals and seven assists, and he leads the team with three game-winning goals.
Durante, a native of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, won his lone game of the week at Oswego by stopping 39 of 42 shots on goal. He posted a .929 save percentage and a 2.95 goals against average.
Durante turned aside 17 shots in the third period and both attempts he faced in overtime, holding the Lakers to 0 for 7 on the powerplay. For the season, he has posted a 10-6-1 record with a 3.13 GAA and a .916 save percentage.
In claiming the weekly rookie , Callanan (Stony Point, NY) tallied two points on a goal and an assist in a 2-0-0 week for the Cardinals that stretched their winning streak to six games.
He scored his first collegiate goal and added an assist in a 4-1 win over Brockport on Friday, Jan. 27, before taking two shots on goal and being on ice for the game-winning tally in a 3-2 victory vs. #7 Geneseo on Saturday, Jan. 28.
