Cortland sophomore second baseman Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) has been named to the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week for the week ending April 19. The team consists of the top players for the week, by position, among all Division III schools. He was the lone second baseman selected.
Elkins batted .611 (11-for-18) with three doubles, a walk, five RBI, nine runs scored and a .667 on-base percentage in a 3-1 week for the Red Dragons. He went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk, three RBI and two runs scored in a 9-6 win at RPI, including a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the eighth inning. Elkins also went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in a 12-3 win over the Engineers to complete the series sweep. Earlier in the week, he finished 3-for-4 with a double, two hit-by-pitches and four runs scored in a 12-6 win over Oswego.
Elkins has played in 32 games this spring, 30 as a starter, and leads the Red Dragons with a .443 batting average.
Cortland (24-8-1, 14-1 SUNYAC) has clinched the top seed for the SUNYAC playoffs. The Red Dragons finish the conference regular season with three games this weekend at Oneonta, and Cortland will host a best-of-three SUNYAC semifinal series versus an opponent to be determined May 1-2.
