Four SUNYAC men's ice hockey student-athletes honored as All-Americans
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), in conjunction with CCM Hockey, named its Division III All-Americans at the pre-Frozen Four banquet on Thursday night. Oswego's Bobby Gertsakis and Shawn Hulshof were both honored with first team accolades for the East Region.
Gertsakis, a defenseman for the Lakers, finished in the top 30 in the country in assists, with 20, which was good for fourth best amongst NCAA Division III defensemen. He helped anchor the Laker defense that ranked in the top ten nationally by allowing just 2.18 goals per game average. He ended up with four goals and 24 points.
Hulshof, who was earlier named the SUNYAC Herb Hammond Most Valuable Player, joined his teammate on the first team. The sophomore was tied for fifth nationally in scoring with 42 points, fifth in goals with 20, and 17th with 22 assists on the season.
Cortland's Nick Zappia was named as a second team All-American, while Brockport's Chase Nieuwendyk was honored on the third team.
Zappia, forward, who has begun playing for the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL, finished with 47 points, notching 24 goals and 23 assists to cap his senior season.
Nieuwendyk, a junior forward, led Brockport in scoring with 30 points on 18 goals and 12 assists.
