Plattsburgh tops SUNYAC ice hockey preseason poll
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Plattsburgh has been voted No.1 in the 2015-16 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's ice hockey preseason poll. The Cardinals recieved 61 total points as voted on by the nine coaches in the conference.
Plattsburgh captured the 2014-15 SUNYAC ice hockey title by defeating Brockport (7-5) and Oswego (2-1) in the conference championship tournament. The Cardinals earned a first-round bye, but lost in the NCAA Division III tournament second-round game, 5-1, at Trinity (CT). Plattsburgh finished the year with a final record of 20-6-2, going 13-2-1 in SUNYAC play.
The other 2014-15 SUNYAC finalist, Oswego, finished second in the 2015-16 SUNYAC preseason poll, garnering 59 total points. Although dropping the SUNYAC tournament final to Plattsburgh, Oswego gained an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and won their opening round game at Hobart 6-1, before losing in the second round at Adrian (MI) 5-4. The Lakers finished the season with a record of 19-5-4 while going 12-2-2 in the SUNYAC.
Plattsburgh and Oswego have won every SUNYAC championship dating back to 2006-07, when Fredoina captured the title.
2015-16 conference play begins Oct. 30. The six-team SUNYAC championship tournament begins Feb. 24, with the championship game set for Saturday, March 5, 2016.
