Oneonta men's soccer hosting Nichols College on Sunday in NCAA 2nd round
The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team will open play this weekend in the 2014 NCAA Division III tournament. The Red Dragons received a first round bye and will play Nichols College in the second round on Sunday at 1pm on Red Dragon Soccer Field. Admission to game is $6 general admission, $3 for seniors and students and $2 for children 3-12.

The SUNY Oneonta State men's soccer team earned its NCAA tournament berth after winning the SUNYAC tournament last weekend. The Red Dragons defeated SUNY Geneseo, 4-0, in the semifinals of the conference tournament before defeating SUNY Cortland, 2-1, in the championship game.

"This will be our fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, which is a great accomplishment for our senior class," said head coach Iain Byrne. "We have experienced both the highs and lows from a Final Four appearance in 2011, to losing in a penalty shootout in 2012, to then being upset in the first round last year after practically dominating the entire match."

Oneonta will be making its fourth straight NCAA appearance since rejoining the ranks of Division III in 2006 and becoming eligible for the NCAA tournament in 2008. In 2011, in its first Division III tournament, the Red Dragons advanced all the way to the national championship weekend in San Antonio.

This is Oneonta's eighth NCAA tournament appearance overall. Prior to 2006, Oneonta competed in Division I & II before officially joining Division III. During that time, Oneonta made four consecutive appearances in the NCAA tournament from 1972-75. In 1972, the Red Dragons played in the first Division II national championship game.

Oneonta will enter the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament with an overall record of 18-0-2. The Red Dragons established a program record with its 20-game unbeaten streak, surpassing its 19 games without a loss set during the 2011 season. The 18 wins have tied the program record also set during its run to San Antonio.

Overall, Oneonta has scored 50 goals while holding its opponents to nine. The Red Dragons have recorded a single season program record 13 shutouts this fall for a shutout percentage of 65 percent. The Red Dragons have been amongst the Division III team leaders in goals against average and currently stand at 0.44. Oneonta also has a huge advantage in shots 316-135 and corner kicks 127-53.

Individually, the Red Dragons have five players who have registered double-digits in points including three juniors, one sophomore and a rookie. Freshman Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville), who was the Rookie of the Year in the SUNYAC and a third team All-Conference selection, leads the squad with 25 points on 12 goals and one assist. SUNYAC Player of the Year, junior Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury), is next with 22 points on eight goals and six assists. Both Williams and Santangelo have collected four game-winning goals each.

Junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) and sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City) have an identical 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Sutherland leads the team with five game-winning goals this season. Sutherland and Purtell were both selected to the All-Conference team with Sutherland named to the first team and Purtell to the second team.

Junior Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's) rounds out this group with 11 points on three goals and five assists.

In the goal, it has been senior Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) who has been the No. 1 keeper for the Red Dragons. He has logged 1,347 minutes and has a 0.26 goals against average with 11 shutouts, which is a new single season program record. The second team All-SUNYAC keeper is 14-0-1 entering the tournament.

Byrne concluded, "There is nothing that can compare to the drama of tournament play, but we feel our past tournament experience, our current form, and the home field advantage will stand us in good stead during this upcoming run. Judging by the crowd at our SUNYAC final, we feel the college and community have gotten behind us and we hope to provide some more excitement and thrilling performances."

Scouting Nichols
The Nichols College men's soccer team advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 win over UMass Boston on Wednesday afternoon. The win was the first-ever for the Bison in the NCAA Tournament in two tries (lost to Eastern Conn. St. 1-0 in 2010).

The Bison are led by freshman and Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Year Rielee Mohsin, who leads them in goals (nine) and points (21). Classmate Paul Sickinger was next on head coach Chris Traina's squad with five goals and 11 points while senior captain Michael Perry tallied nine points (2-5-9).

Defensively, senior Phil Mitto and juniors Christian Cole and Pat DeRosa anchor a defense that allowed 13 goals in 21 matches (.619 GAA). Mitto was a CCC First Team pick while DeRosa (Second Team) and Cole (Honorable Mention) were also recognized by the conference.

Senior Jeremy Nash owns a 10-1-3 mark with a 0.49 GAA and an .877 save percentage.
