Cortland Set to Host SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place this weekend at SUNY Cortland. The meet will begin Friday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. and run through Saturday.

The location of the SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships is predetermined and rotates every year.

Since 2001, Cortland and Geneseo have been the only men's teams to win the SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The same is the case for the women with the exception of Brockport winning in 2009.

Last season, Cortland won both the men's and women's team titles. However, the Oneonta men's team is coming off an indoor track & field championship and looking to win back-to-back indoor and outdoor titles.

Cortland women are coming off an indoor track and field title, but the Geneseo women were close behind and are looking to be a top competitor for the outdoor track and field women's title.

As you will read below, there are a lot of opportunities for history to be made at this year's SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Oneonta and Plattsburgh are looking to make school history with first-time wins in specific events.

    WOMEN:
    100m Dash

Last season, Jazmin Dunham (Buffalo State) won the 100m dash. Sasha Henry (Buffalo State) finished second and Sarah Bonnell (Cortland State) finished third. All three females will be returning to compete in the event this season. Henry currently holds the top performance time of 11.86 recently achieved on April 25th at the 47th Annual Hillsdale College GINA Relays. Bonnell owns the second top performance time of 12.17, followed by Dunham with 12.36. Oneonta's Kaitlyn Brandt is close behind with a time of 12.37.

    200m Dash
Jazmin Dunham, the Buffalo State junior, also won the 200m dash last season. Identical to the 100m dash, Sasha Henry (Buffalo State) finished second and Sarah Bonnell (Cortland State) finished third. This season Dunham holds the top performance time of 24.98. Sasha Henry has the second top performance time of 25.11. Another Buffalo State Bengal, freshman Katrina Lambert has the third top time of 25.50.
If Dunham wins the 200m this year, it would be the third consecutive 200m dash SUNYAC title for her.

    400m Dash
Cortland State's Abby VanderVeen won the 400m dash title at last year's SUNYAC championship. However, VanderVeen graduated. With her absence Rosi Cummings (Cortland State) has the top performance time of 58.33, which is better than last year's winning SUNYAC time of 58.75 ran by VanderVeen. Africa Harper (Cortland State) has the second top performance time of 58.61, followed by Allison Hoh (Geneseo) with 58.63.

    800m Run
Kelly Brunscheen, a Geneseo senior won the 800m dash last season. Amanda Schermerhorn (Plattsburgh State) has the top performance time of 2:13.71. Keira Wood and Cailin Kowalewski finished second and third at last year's SUNYAC championships. This year Wood has the second top performance time (2:13.87) followed by Kowalewski (2:14.40).
If Schermerhorn wins the 800m run title, it would be the first time since 2003 a school other than Geneseo or Oneonta has won the event.

    1500m Run
Mary Aldridge (Geneseo) won the 1500m run at the 2012 SUNYAC championships. Danielle Kennedy (Oneonta) and Brianna McLoughlin (Oneonta) took second. Despite all women returning for this year's championship, three new runners hold the top performance time. Alyssa Smith (Geneseo) has the top time of 4:33.99. Cailin Kowalewski is close behind with 4:37.00, followed by Jordyn Naylon (Cortland) with 4:43.75. Amanda Schermerhorn (Plattsburgh State) is also very close with the top performance time leaders, trailing at 4:44.07. This season, Geneseo's Alyssa Smith and Mary Aldridge appear to be leaders in this event along with Amanda Schermerhorn (Plattsburgh State).
Geneseo and Oneonta have been taking turns winning the 1500m run since 2002. It is looking like the pattern will continue this year. Alyssa Smith won the title in 2011 and is looking to cap off her senior year with a second 1500m title.

    5000m Run
Alyssa Smith, the Geneseo senior, has been dominating distance running in the SUNYAC conference. With the first and second place finishers from last season graduated, Smith has the top time of 17:23.53. Her time is even better than last year's first place time of 17:38.69, set by Alyson Dalton (Cortland). Jordyn Naylon (Cortland)is only three seconds behind Smith with her top performance time of 17:26.45. Danielle Kennedy (Oneonta) owns the third top performance time of 17:35.12.

    10,000m Run
Last year's second place finisher, Rachel Malone has the top performance time this season. Last year's title winner has graduated and Malone holds the top time of 36:18.04. Danielle Kennedy (Oneonta) is also on the top time leader board with 37:07.50, followed by Alyssa Knott (Geneseo) with 38:05.01.
If Malone wins, it would mark the first time ever that a Brockport athlete has won the 10,000m run title since SUNYAC adopted the event in 1987.

    100m Hurdles
Jazmin Dunham (Buffalo State) won the title last year, and holds the top performance time this year. She is coming into the event with a better time (14.41) than her winning time from last season (14.59). Nicole Shafer, a Cortland heptathalon athlete, owns the second top time of 14.81, followed by sophomore Allison Hoh (Geneseo) with 14.85.
If Dunham wins the event, it would be her third consecutive 100m hurdles title and she could be on her way to a 100m hurdles SUNYAC sweep during her collegiate career.

    400m Hurdles
Allison Hoh (Geneseo) took second in last year's 400m hurdles event. This season she has the top time of 1:02.52. Cortland's Caitlin Triantafillou trails 1:04.92, followed by Victoria Kuberka (Geneseo) with 1:06.36.

If Hoh takes the 400m hurdles title, it would be the first time since 1995 that a Geneseo athlete won the event.

    3,000m Steeplechase
Marissa Liberarti (Cortland), Bori Tozser (Cortland) and Collen Coon (Plattsburgh) finished in the top three spots last season. Collen Coon is the only medalist from last year holding a top performance time this season. She has the second top performance time of 11.24.40. Senior Alyssa Smith (Geneseo) has been dominating the 3000m steeplechase during regular season competition. Smith holds the top time this season of 10:32.02. Geneseo freshman, Shannon Murphy brings in the third top performance time (11.29.29).
Smith won the title in 2009 as a freshman. If she wins the event this year, it would make it five years in a row Geneseo has taken the title.

    4x100m Relay
Last season, Cortland won the 4x100m relay. However, the Cortland team lost two runners who graduated. Oneonta finished second and Brockport State finished third during last year's championships. Both schools are returning with all their medalist runners. Oneonta has the second top performance in the conference (49.68) followed by Brockport State (49.94). Buffalo State has stepped into the 4x100m relay scene with the top performance time of the season 47.01.
Buffalo State had a five year winning streak in the event until Cortland took the title last year. Buffalo State is looking eager to reclaim the 4x100m relay.

    4x400m Relay
Despite last year's winner Cortland State, losing a few seniors to graduation, the Cortland team still has the top relay team in the conference. They own the top time of 3:55.99. Buffalo holds the second top time (3:57.15) followed by Geneseo (4:03.81). Buffalo State has never won the 4x400m relay, but this season could be different since they are so close to Cortland's top time.

    High Jump
Last year, Lexi Budd a Cortland sophomore won the high jump title. As a junior, she is still performing well and currently holds the third top performance jump of 1.60m. She is very close to Kacy Boburka (Oneonta) and Taylor Hudson (Cortland) who share the top performance jump of 1.63m

    Pole Vault
With last season's winner Becky Fabbiano (Brockport) graduated, the second and third place finishers are holding the top performances this season. Christi Nassauer (Cortland) finished third last season, but holds the top jump for the 2013 season (3.45m). Brittany DalCais (Oswego State) was second last season, and holds the same spot in this year's top performance list (3.40m). Marcy Merritt (Brockport State) is close behind with 3.35m.

    Long Jump
Sarah Bonell (Cortland State) won the event last year as a sophomore. As a junior she is continuing to perform great and holds the top performance jump (5.85m). Two other Cortland athletes hold top conference jumps. Amber Stephens (5.62m) has the second top performance, followed by Taylor Hudson (5.52m).

    Triple Jump
Amber Stephens took second in the triple jump at last year's SUNYAC championships. With last year's winner graduated, Stephens has the top performance in the conference. Stephens own the top jump of 11.69m. However, two freshman are close behind her. Hailey Smith (Brockport) has the second top jump (11.01m) followed by Treasure Glymph (Buffalo State) with 10.93m.
Stephens won the title in 2011, which was the first time Cortland had won the event since 1989.

    Shot Put
Nicole Jones (Brockport) won the title last year, and is looking to defend it this season. Jones has the top performance coming into the event with 13.25m, a big lead from the second top performance of 12.09m, set by Valerie Vancol (Cortland). Kacy Boburka owns the third top performance of 11.65m.

    Discus Throw
With last year's winner graduated, the second and third place finishers are leading the conference. Amanda Gadway (Plattsburgh) finished third at last year's championships and has the top performance this season of 42.43m. Courtney White (Brockport) was the second place finisher at the 2012 championships. White owns the second top performance (42.34m), followed by Brockport's Ann Milliken (39.35m).
If Gadway finishes first this season, it would mark the first time a Plattsburgh athlete has won the discus since SUNYAC adopted the event in 1986.

    Hammer Throw
Sarah Timmons won the hammer throw last season as a senior. Katie Parsons (Oneonta) owns the top performance in the conference of 49.49m. Nicole Jones (Brockport) and Kristine Hoover (Brockport) finished second and third at last year's championship. This season, both women are coming into the event with second and third place top performances.
Parsons winning the event would be the second time Oneonta has won the event since 1992, when SUNYAC included the event.

    Javelin Throw
Both leaders from last year's event, Sarah Timmons (Oneonta) and Jackie Boyea (Plattsburgh) have graduated. Kacy Boburka, a heptathalon has the top performance in the conference of 36.39m. Victoria Reynolds (Plattsburgh State) trails Boburka with 32.52m and Mallory Eckert who finished third last year has the third top performance of 32.31m.
If Boburka won the event, it would be only the second time in school history that Oneonta produced a javelin champion

    Heptathlon
Nicole Schafer (Cortland) won the title last year as a junior. She led with 4313 points, followed by Gina Campagna (Cortland) with 3188 points. Kacy Boburka (Oneonta), Taylor Hudson (Cortland), and Kristie Pageau (Plattsburgh) have the top performances of the season, all performed during the Cortland Classic Invitational on April 19th. If things play out similar to the Cortland Classic Invitational, an Oneonta athlete may take the title this year. This would mark the first time an Oneonta athlete has won the event.

    MEN:
    100m Dash

Sean Bernstein (Oneonta) won the event last season and is looking to defend his title. He currently holds the top time in the conference of 10.43, which is better than his time from last year's championships (10.67). Melique Garcia (Cortland) has the second top time (10.73), followed by Joe Carr (Oneonta) with 10.82.

    200m Dash
Last year, Sean Bernstein was not only the champion in the SUNYAC 200m dash, he was the national champion in the event. Bernstein continues to be a leader this season with the top time of 21.29. Similar to the 100m, Melique Garcia trails him with 21.94 and Todd Colas (Buffalo State) has the third top time (22.05).

    400m Dash
With last year's first and second place finishers graduated, third place finisher Eric Banks (Cortland) has moved up in the conference leader board. Banks has the second top time in the conference of 48.65. He closely trails the new leader, Stephan Linton (Cortland) who has the top time of 48.63.Mathew Wagenhauser of Oswego State holds the third top time in the conference of 49.04.

    800m Run
Bumkuth Jiak (Buffalo State) is the new leader in the conference for the 800m run. Last season Tim Fargiano, a Buffalo State senior won the event with a time of 1:54.39. Jiak holds the top time in the conference of 1:51.75, better than Fargiano's title winning performance. Chris Carter (Geneseo), who placed second last year has the second best time this season (1.53.63), trailed by Alex Ngabo (Buffalo State) with 1.53.78. It is looking to be a close race between the 800m runners.
If Jiak or Ngabo win the event, it would be only the second time in twenty years that Buffalo State has won the 800m title.

    1,500m Run
Bumkuth Jiak (Buffalo State) holds the top time in the 1,500m run. Eddie Novara (Geneseo) won the event last season with 3:58.10. Jiak, a freshman, is coming into the event with a better time than Novara's winning time (3:50.51). Alex Brimstein (Geneseo) is close behind Jiak with 3:54.12. Alex Ngabo (Buffalo State) is coming into the event with the third top performance time (3:54.87).
Buffalo State has not won the 1,500m title since SUNYAC adopted the event in 1986. This year could be the first time Buffalo State nabs the 1,500m SUNYAC title.

5,000m Run:Lee Berube (Geneseo), a senior, won the event last year with a time of
14:43.44. Alex Brimstein (Geneseo) finished second last season with 15:09.94.
Brimstein has improved dramatically to hold the top performance time this season
(14:27.23). Brimstein could make it a four year Geneseo winning streak in the 5,000,
if he continues to perform well. Pat Fannon (Cortland) owns the second top time
    (14.38.63), followed by Cortland's Top Hopkins (14:43.82).

10,000m Run:A Geneseo senior won the 10,000m run at last year's SUNYAC championships.
In his absence, Tom Hopkins (Cortland) owns the top performance time (30:27.82).
Nick Marcantonio (Cortland) holds the second top time (30:52.72), followed by
    Plattsburgh's Mike Schram (31:43.38).

    110m Hurdles:
The leader board for the 110m hurdles has changed dramatically from last year. None of the medalists own the top times in the conference this season. Instead, two freshman have taken over the conference. Eric Williams, a Fredonia State freshman has the top time of 14.84 which is better than last year's winning time of 15.32, set by Rob Farrell (Oneonta). Carl Caughell (Fredonia State) has the second best time of 15.06. Jake Alviene, an Oneonta freshman winds up with the third best time of 15.16.

    400m Hurdles:
At last year's 400m hurdles, two seniors captured first and second place. This season, a few underclassmen have been dominating the 400m hurdles. Steve Kunzia (Oneonta) owns the top time in the conference of 55.04. Sophomores Samuel Taft (Brockport) owns the second top time of 55.52, followed by Christian Igielinski (Geneseo) with 56.32.

3,000m Steeplechase:Cody Amengual won the 3,000m steeplechase title at last year's SUNYAC championships.
His winning time was 9:17.66. This season, Amengual has broken the conference of
8:57.96 set in 2009 by Cortland's Kyle O'Brien. Amengual could very well break the
meet record if he gets under a 9:17.40, which he was very close to last season.
Amengual currently has the top time of 8:57.54. Identical to last year's championship
finish, Alex Brimstein (Geneseo) owns the second top spot (9.13.74), followed by
    Chris Harvey (Oneonta) with 9:25.80.

    4x100m Relay:
Oneonta won the 4x100m relay title for the first time last season since SUNYAC
adopted the event in 1986. Oneonta won the 4x100m relay title last season. Despite losing one
senior from its winning team, Oneonta is coming into this year's championships with the top
performance time (41.83). They achieved the time very recently on April 29th at the
Penn Relays. Cortland State is close behind with 42.27. Brockport who finished third
in the event last season is currently in third place in terms of performance time
    this season (42.88).

    4x400m Relay:
Cortland State set a conference record at last year's SUNYACs for the 4x400m relay with their time of 3:15.23. Cortland continues to be a leader in the event and currently owns the top time in the conference of 3:18.36. This season, Oneonta trails Cortland by just two seconds (3:20.91), followed by Oswego State (3:21.61).
If Cortland wins, it would make it the fourth consecutive year they’ve taken the 4x400m relay title.

    High Jump:
A senior won the high jump at the 2012 SUNYAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. For the 2013 championships, Ron Major (Buffalo State) is entering the event with the top performance jump (1.95m). Phil Longo (Geneseo) who finished third last season shares the second top performance jump of 1.93m with Luke Taverne, his Geneseo teammate.
If Major wins the high jump, it would mark the first time since 1993 that Buffalo State has won the title.

    Pole Vault:
Two seniors held the top spots at last year's pole vault championship. Zach Ferrara (Brockport) who finished third last season currently has the best performance in the conference of 4.66m. Robert Brower (Cortland) and Cody Dahleiden (Fredonia) are hot on his tail with the second best performances of 4.65m. The pole vault will be an exciting event at this year's SUNYAC championships.

    Long Jump:
The 2012 SUNYAC long jump championship was dominated by two seniors. With their absence, Cortland State freshman, Andre Hernandez-Green holds the top performance in the conference (7.02m). Alex Brennan (Fredonia) and Richard Pete (Buffalo State) are coming into the event with the second top performances of 6.84m.

    Triple Jump:
Despite sustaining an MCL tear, PJ Flynn is returning to the SUNYAC scene strong. He currently owns the top performance jump in the conference of 14.36m. Flynn's jump is better than last year's winning jump of 14.24m made by Cortland's Will Razzano. Two  Buffalo State athletes are coming into the event with the second and third best performances. Richard Pete owns the second best performance (14.11m), trailed by Ray Richardson (13.91m).

    Shot Put:
A Cortland State junior, Justin Torres, won the shot put title at the 2012 SUNYAC championships. This season, sophomore Joe Fox (Oneonta) holds the top performance spot with 15.84m. Jordan Fuentes (Buffalo State) is close behind with 15.49m. J.D. Roth who finished third at last year's championships is entering the event with the third best performance (15.19m).
Oneonta has never won the SUNYAC shot put title and this year could be the first since the event was included in the SUNYAC championships in 1986.

    Discus Throw:
Darius Favors, a Brockport freshman won the event last season. As a sophomore, Favors is coming into this year's championship with the third best performance (46.81m). Jordan Fuentes (Brockport) finished second last season. Fuentes is coming into the event with the best performance throw (49.23) and is looking to end his collegiate career with a discus throw title. Joe Fox (Oneonta) holds the second best performance spot with his throw of 47.04m.
Fuentes could make it the sixth consecutive year that Brockport has taken the discus title.

    Hammer Throw:
Dustin Colgan, a Brockport senior won the hammer throw event at the 2012 SUNYAC championships. Coming into the championships this year, Pat Weinert (Oneonta) owns the top performance throw of 54.42m. Weinert's throw is better than last year's winning throw of 50.10m made by Colgan. J.D. Roth, another Oneonta athlete has the second top performance of 53.72m. Tyler Prendergast (Cortland) owns the third top performance in the conference (52.27m).
Should Weinert win the hammer throw, it would also be the first time Oneonta has won the title. SUNYAC adopted the event in 1986.

    Javelin Throw:
Ben Depo (Plattsburgh) won the javelin throw at the 2012 SUNYAC championships with a distance of 57.11m. For the 2013 season, a freshman from Plattsburgh State holds the top performance. Seth Allen accomplished a throw of 57.11m just recently at the 2013 Capital District Classic on April 27th. Darius Favors (Cortland) took third place at last year's championships and holds the second top performance in the conference (54.69m). Charles Millar (Cortland) currently owns the third top performance of 50.41m.

    Decathlon:
Spencer Lefort (Fredonia) and Samuel Taft (Brockport) took first and second place at last year's SUNYAC decathlon championships. For the 2013 season, Ben Depo (Plattsburgh State) has the top performance of 6277 achieved at the Cortland Classic Invitational. Dustin Cox (Oneonta) and James Moyer (Cortland) competed against Depo at the same event. Cox finished second with 5794 points followed by James Moyer (5205 points). Depo actually won the decathlon during the 2011 SUNYACs. If things run similar to the Cortland Classic Invitational, Depo could have another SUNYAC title.
Depo would also go down in history as the first Plattsburgh athlete to clinch the decathlon title.
