Bernstein Selected as Top Track Athlete in Division III
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the National Athlete of the Year award winners for 2013 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season as chosen by the nation’s coaches. SUNY Oneonta senior Sean Bernstein along with Tim VanLiew of Rutgers-Camden, Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh and Melissa Norville of Illinois College earned the distinctions of National Athletes of the Year for the 2013 outdoor season.
Bernstein claimed two national titles at the Division III Outdoor Championships this past weekend at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He successfully defended his 200m title from 2012 while earning a second national title as a member of the 4×100 relay. In addition, he was also national runner-up at 100 meters. His performance earned him the honor of being the outstanding male track performer of the championships.
The accolades for Bernstein capped a remarkable final year for the Red Dragons in which he won every top award from the conference level to these national honors.
During the outdoor season, Bernstein won three SUNYAC titles en route to being the male Track Athlete of the Year for a fourth consecutive time. In 12 total finals this spring between both 100 and 200 meters, he lost just once - that coming by seven, one-thousandths of a second in the 100m final at the NCAA championships.
He was selected as the Atlantic Region Male Track Athlete of the Year for a third time during his career this spring while bringing home three All-American certificates from the NCAA championships.
During the indoor season, Bernstein was an All-American in the 60 meters after finishing second. He earned the conference’s top male track athlete at the SUNYAC championships after winning three titles.
