#2 Cortland Advances to Title Game with 19-12 Win vs. #6 Middlebury
CHESTER, PA. - The nationally second-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team erased an early 4-0 deficit and rallied for a 19-12 win versus sixth-ranked Middlebury College Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Div. III Women's Lacrosse Semifinals at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The Red Dragons improved to 21-1 on the season and advanced to their first-ever championship game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. where they will face the winner of Trinity versus Franklin & Marshall. The Panthers' season ended at 16-4 in head coach Missy Foote's final game on the sidelines.
Cortland junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led all scorers with five goals. Sophomore Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) and freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) each tallied a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) recorded two goals and one assist, juniors Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) and Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) each netted a pair of goals and senior Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) registered five assists.
Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made six saves. Hayes-Hurley secured nine draw controls, and Monaghan and Bello won four draws apiece.
Juniors Laurel Pascal (Greenwich, CT/Taft) and Alli Sciarretta (Wilton, CT/Convent of the Sacred Heart) led Middlebury with four goals each. Senior Katie Ritter (Middlebury, VT/Middlebury Union) scored twice, sophomore Mary O'Connell (Norwell, MA) tallied one goal and four assists and junior Bridget Instrum (Granby, MA/Williston Northampton) scored a goal.
Junior goalie Katie Mandigo (Cornwall, VT/Loomos Chaffee) stopped six shots and surrendered 11 goals in 38:44, while junior Madeleine Kinker (Rye) recorded one save over the final 21:16. Ritter caused two turnovers.
The Panthers built a quick 4-0 lead as they controlled possession for more than 10 minutes to open the game. Ritter opened the scoring 3:26 into the game with an unassisted effort. Pascal followed with back-to-back scores, the first an unassisted goal at 24:04 and the second on a free position goal at 23:06, forcing a Cortland timeout. The lead grew to 4-0 on O'Connell's goal at 19:53.
Elmer tallied a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart at 17:59 and 17:38, respectively, and Monaghan trimmed the Middlebury lead to 4-3 off an assist from Elmer at 12:20. Ritter stopped the Cortland run with her second of the game at 9:55, but Gentile netted back-to-back goals only 17 seconds apart to make it a 5-5 score with 8:34 remaining in the half. Pascal's third goal of the game off an assist from junior Megan Griffin (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) at 6:21 gave the Panthers back the lead. Cortland, however, closed the half with three consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead. Elmer tallied her third at 5:37, Gentile netted her third at 5:00 and Ohberg finished off an assist from Farrell at 3:56.
Cortland opened the second half with three straight goals to build an 11-6 lead. Hayes-Hurley scored an unassisted goal at 27:21, Monaghan followed with her second goal of the game at 24:44 and Gentile scored off an assist from Farrell at 23:54. Indstrum ended a 15:01 Middlebury scoring drought with a free position goal at 21:20 to make it an 11-7 game.
The Red Dragons threatened to run away with the game by scoring the next four goals for a 15-7 advantage. Gentile netted her fifth goal of the game on a quick-stick shot off a pass from Ohberg at 17:52. Bello then finished off Farrell's fifth assist of the game at 13:45 before Elmer netted an unassisted goal at 12:58 and Ohberg converted on the free position at 11:19.
Middlebury responded with a four-goal run to pull to within 15-11 at the 6:37 mark. The combination of O'Connell assisting Sciarretta hooked up three times during the run, and Pascal tallied her fourth goal of the game. The Red Dragons won the ensuing draw control, which eventually led to a goal by Hayes-Hurley at 5:29. Ohberg followed with a goal into an empty net at 4:11 to make it a 17-11 game. Sciarretta scored her fourth goal of the game at 1:53, but the Red Dragons finished off the scoring with goals by Bello and Ohberg into a vacated cage for the 19-12 final. Â
