Cortland (13-5), under 10th-year head coach Steve Beville, is making its 16th straight NCAA tournament appearance and 32nd overall, including 25 on the Division III level.
Cortland earned an NCAA berth this season by winning its ninth straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title, 7-6 versus Brockport, this past Saturday. Cortland won the game on a goal with two seconds left in regulation. The Red Dragons opened the season with a 1-4 record and were 3-5 entering April but have won their last 10 games. Four of Cortland's five losses this year have come to teams in this year's NCAA field (RIT, Stevenson, Amherst and Ithaca), and the Red Dragons have wins over NCAA selections Cabrini and Morrisville State.
Western New England (15-3) earned its trip to the NCAA tournament after defeating Endicott College, 14-12, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) finals on Saturday. The Golden Bears are making their eighth NCAA tournament appearance overall and fourth in the last five years.
Western New England has advanced to the national quarterfinals four times (2007-09, 13). In three of those years, the Golden Bears lost to Cortland in the quarterfinal round. Cortland defeated WNEU on the road in 2007 and at home in 2009 and 2013.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the national quarterfinals with wins over Springfield and Endicott before losing at RIT. The Red Dragons have reached at least the quarterfinal round each of the last 14 years. Cortland has played in the national championship game five times since 2006, with four straight showings from 2006-09 as well as an appearance in 2012. Cortland won the 2006 national crown versus Salisbury and the 2009 title against Gettysburg. The Red Dragons lost to Salisbury in the national finals in 2007, 2008 and 2012.
