Good Start for Swimming and Diving Championships

The 2011 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming and Diving Championships has officially ended it first full day of competition. Thursday could be an indicator of a championship meet filled with fast swimming, as twelve NCAA “B” cuts were obtained, and impressive diving as four men and four women posted national qualifying scores. Yesterday’s slate of events featured the preliminary diving rounds for the men’s 1-meter and the women’s 3-meter diving.
The Geneseo women lead the team standings following Thursday night’s finals with a score of 243.5. New Paltz is not far behind at 183.5 followed by Cortland (181) and Fredonia (169).
Geneseo senior Michelle Rodriguez became a four-time individual SUNYAC champion in the 500 freestyle with a winning NCAA “B” cut time of 5:00.12, just missing the NCAA automatic qualifying time (5:00.03). She also teamed up with Jennifer Anthone, Lauren Boyce and Elyssa Max for a winning time in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36. 77.
The New Paltz women had two individuals and one relay find its way to the top of the awards pedestal and well as two runner-up finishes. Senior Marissa Morris claimed her first individual conference crown of her career with a time of 2:10.06 in the 200 individual-medley and junior Christine Rieth posted the fastest time in the 50 freestyle (24.05). It is Rieth’s second title in the event after winning in 2009 and the sixth time in the last seven years that a New Paltz swimmer has placed first. Rieth also swam the ancor leg of the 400 medley relay teaming up with Victoria Scalise, Becky Baker and Carly Marshall for a winning time of 3:54.67.
Fredonia sophomore Sarah Ficarro successfully defended her SUNYAC 3-meter diving title with a score of 478.85 point. Ficarro outscored Brockport’s Maria Quagliana (432.05) who two second and two of her teammates, Ashley Keller (413.60) and Katelyn Haley (412.80), who took third and fourth, respectively.

On the men’s side, Geneseo won five of the six events on the evening as they currently stand in first place of the leader board with 236 points, followed by Cortland (207), New Paltz (132) and Fredonia (123).
The Blue Wave was led by juniors Nate Foley and Ken Pink who defended their conference titles for the second consecutive year. Foley won the 500 freestyle in 4:41.56 and Pink claimed the 200 individual-medley in 1:55.67. Geneseo won its seventh straight title in the 400 medley relay as Pink teamed up with Josh Kaplan, Austin Brennan and Dan Strothenke for a time of 3:29.40. Geneseo finished one-two in the 50 free led by Frank Schiappa (20.98) who out-touched Strothenke (21.07).
The men’s 1-meter diving event was a close competition with the top four finishers separated by 8.35 points, as Geneseo’s Wills DeMoulin took top honors with a score of 455.10 points. The College at Brockport earned 33 points in the event as Dan Brigano finished second (454.35) and Chris Austin claimed third (452.50). Fredonia’s Ryan Fuller completed the top four with a final score of 446.75.
Cortland’s four-some of Matt Distler, Daniel Maximowicz, Luke Strothenke and Benjamin Strickland took first in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:25.81. It is the third consecutive year the Red Dragons have won that relay event.
Tomorrow morning’s preliminary session will consist of the 200 medley relay, the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 freestyle relay as well as the prelims for the men’s 3-meter and women’s 1-meter boards. The morning session will start at 10 a.m., while the finals will be held in the evening beginning at 6pm.
