Records Fall on Day Two of Championships
Results
Two SUNYAC Championship meet records and one conference record fell on Friday evening of the swimming and diving championships as the Geneseo men’s and women’s teams held on to their leads .
The Blue Wave men won three events to extend their lead (516.5), followed by Cortland (449) who touched first in three events, New Paltz (301) and Fredonia (247).
The Geneseo men were led by CJ Schaub who captured the 100 breast in 57.27, after posting a SUNYAC and meet record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 57.10 in the morning prelims. He defeated Potsdam’s Alexander Taylor (58.93) and two-time defending champion and teammate Ken Pink (59.16). Schaub opened the night by teaming up with Josh Kaplan, Andrew Kuter and Frank Schiappa for 200 medley relay in a winning time of 1:35.04. Austin Brennan was the third win for the Blue Wave in the 100 butterfly (52.00) out-touching second-place Ryan Walsh of Oneonta by one-tenth of a second (52.10).
Cortland finished one-two in the 200 freestyle as freshman Matt Distler clocked a 1:43.65 and Mark Hanifin touched at 1:44.84. Sophomore Benjamin Strickland broke the SUNYAC meet record by almost a seven-tenths of a second in the 100-backstroke with an NCAA provisional time of 51.99 and then took part in the winning 800-freestyle relay (7:01.60) with Hanifin, Distler and Justin Nelson.
New Paltz senior Rob Webb defended his conference title in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:13.57, just edging out second place Nathan Stegar of Buffalo State (4:13.95). The Hawks have won the event three of the last four years.
The Geneseo women (516.5) maintained their first-place standing despite the New Paltz Hawks (454.5) earning five first-place finishes on the night. Cortland tabbed 206 points on the night to hold onto third at 387, followed by Fredonia at 291.
The New Paltz medley team of Yuka Suzuka, Becky Baker, Carly Marshall and Christine Rieth won the 200 medley relay in a new meet, conference and NCAA provisional time of 1:46.44. Baker and Suzuka followed that performance by successful defending their titles in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.87) and 100 backstroke (58.36), respectively, in NCAA provisional times.
First year Chelsea Allocco was also a double winner on the night for the Hawks as she won the 400 individual medley in a “B” cut time of 4:33.84, over six seconds ahead of Geneseo’s Kelly Battaglia (4:40.06) breaking a five year streak of the Blue Wave finishing on top. Allocco ended the night on the winning 800 freestyle relay (7:47.65) when she teamed up with Marissa Morris, Victoria Scalise and Jessica Lester. It was a close race between New Paltz and Geneseo (7:49.50) before Lester pulled ahead in the final 50-yards with an individual split time of 1:55.32.

Sophomore Jessica Evans notched the Cortland Red Dragons’ first win of the meet with a 58.23 in the 100 butterfly.
The schedule for the final day begins with prelims at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 6 p.m. Team and individual trophy presentations will begin immediately following the conclusion of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
