Rodriguez, Ficarro and Quagliana Earn All-America on Day One of Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference had three All-American performances on day one of the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference had three All-American performances on day one of the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
Geneseo senior Michelle Rodriguez earned first-team All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a SUNYAC and school record time of 4:56.22. It is the 14th All-America certificate of her career. Rodriguez will compete in the 200 free on Thursday and the 100 freestyle on Saturday.
Two divers represented the conference well on the women’s 3-meter board. Fredonia state sophomore Sarah Ficarro placed ninth and Brockport’s Maria Quagliana finished 15th, both earning honorable mention All-American accolades. Ficarro moved up five spots in the finals, following her preliminary performance to seal the victory in the consolation round, while Quagliana scored her highest mark of the round on her final dive to clinch 15th. Both divers will return to compete in the 1-meter competition starting Friday morning.
Other SUNYAC swimmers included the New Paltz women’s 200 medley relay foursome of Yuka Suzuka, Becky Baker, Carly Marshall and Christine Rieth who placed 23rd. The Hawk quartet clocked a 1:47.67, which stood more than a second slower than its seed time of 1:46.44. Rieth also swam the 50 freestyle in the morning heats, registering a 24.37 for 46th overall in the event. New Paltz will contest the 400 medley relay on Thursday morning.
In men's action, Geneseo sophomore Frank Schiappa finished 28th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.79 and teamed with juniors Aaron Wagner,Andrew Kuter and Dan Strothenke to place 23rd in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:35.54.
Senior Wills DeMoulin, a two-time All-American in one-meter diving, competes in the one-meter board on Thursday and the three-meter board on Saturday. Schiappa swims the 200 free on Thursday and the 100 free on Saturday while the relay quartet will compete in the 200 free relay on Thursday, the 800 free relay on Friday and the 400 free relay on Saturday.
