Men's 200 Free Relay and Rodriguez Take Home All-America Honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The SUNYAC had two more All-American performances on day two of the 2011 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center.
Geneseo’s Michelle Rodriguez garnered her second All-America certificate of the championship by earning honorable mention with a ninth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a SUNYAC and school record time of 1:50.14. She held the previous record of 1:50.25, set at last year’s national meet.
Rodriguez will attempt to become Geneseo’s all-time leader in All-America awards for all sports when she competes in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday.
The Geneseo men’s 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Frank Schiappa and juniors Aaron Wagner, Andrew Kuter and Dan Strothenke collected honorable mention All-America recognition by placing 13th in a time of 1:23.62.
Senior Wills DeMoulin placed 20th with a score of 345.05 in one-meter diving, while Schiappa also swam the 200 free and finished in a time of 1:47.16, a full 1.5 seconds faster than his seed time. DeMoulin, will compete in the three-meter board and Schiappa will swim the 100 free on Saturday, while Geneseo quartet will compete in the 800 free relay on Friday and the 400 free relay on Saturday.
The SUNY New Paltz women’s 400 medley relay contingent of sophomore Yuka Suzuka, senior Becky Baker, sophomore Carly Marshall and junior Christine Rieth finished 20th in 3:55.82. Suzuka led the relay off with a 58.73 on the backstroke leg, while Baker went a 1:05.65 on the breaststroke leg. Marshall split a 58.79 on the butterfly leg, while Rieth clocked a 52.65 100 freestyle bringing the relay home.
Friday, Marshall will swim the 200 butterfly, Suzuka will swim the 100 backstroke and Baker will swim the 100 breaststroke.
The SUNYAC will also have divers Sarah Ficarro and Maria Quagliana competing in the 1-meter springboard event on Friday.
