SUNYAC Annual Women's Lacrosse Awards Announced
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to recognize and award this season's Player of the Year, Defender of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and All-Conference teams for the 2016 women's lacrosse season. All awards were voted on by the SUNYAC women's lacrosse conference coaches.
Tara Monaghan from Cortland is this season's Player of the Year. Courtney Szczesniak from Brockport was named this season's Defender of the Year. Teresa Shattuck of Oswego was named this season's Rookie of the Year. The 2015-2016 Coach of the Year award goes to Stephen Wagner of Brockport.
Cortland's Tara Monaghan made the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team and also helped lead her team to the 2016 SUNYAC Championship title. Monaghan leads the conference in goals per game averaging at 3.83 overall. She also leads in shots per game with an average of 7.06 per game. Monaghan and the Red Dragons will head back to the NCAA Tournament as reigning National Champions. Cortland will host the first and second round games Saturday and Sunday.Â
Courtney Szczezniak was a strong force on Brockport's defense. She averaged 1.53 caused turnovers overall and 2.35 ground balls per game. She was also named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.
Teresa Shattuck had a very successful rookie year for Oswego. She is third in the conference in assists per game averaging 3.06 overall. She is third in the conference in points per game averaging 4.94 per game.Â
Stephen Wagner is in his fifth year as head coach of Brockport women's lacrosse. This season, he led his team to the 2016 SUNYAC Championship, falling just short of the title to Cortland. His record on the season was 14-3. The Golden Eagles recieved an at-large into the NCAA tournament and will continue playing Sunday.
