Defensive showcase advances Brockport to Sweet 16

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 12 College at Brockport faced off against the No. 10 ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday in the second round of the 2016 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship, securing a strong 10-1 win.

The Golden Eagles improve to 15-3 on the year while their season carries on, and the Seahawks finish their 2016 campaign at 16-4.

Brockport got off to a strong start, netting the first goal at the 29 minute mark when Samantha Dooling worked in an Andrea Zlinsky set up to take the early 1-0 advantage. The tight contest ensued, with neither team able to work in a goal over the next 20 minutes of play.

The Green and Gold ended the scoring drought, when Keeley Rice found the back of the cage unassisted for the 2-0 lead. By the 3:20 mark, that lead extended to 3-0 when Zlinsky worked in her own goal. The lone St. Mary's goal of the game came in the waning seconds of the half, when the Seahawks offense scrambled to get in a goal before the break, to make the count 3-1.

Head coach Stephen Wagner's squad came out of the half with confidence, and by the 25-minute mark netted their fourth score, with a Kelly Wall goal. Less than two minutes later, Wall set up a Jessica Boddery score for the 5-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles weren't done yet, as the Zlinsky to Dooling connection worked again, and with 21 minutes to play, the Green and Gold had established a 6-1 lead.

Brockport continued its dominance, with two more scores within ten seconds of one another down to the 16:08 mark. Boddery found the back of the cage, with Hannah Cullen working in a score to push the Green and Gold lead to 8-1.

With the contest all but secured, the Golden Eagles added two final scores, with a diving goal from Wall and a final score off the stick of Boddery to make the final count 10-1.

Sara Shaddock played a stellar 60 minutes of action in route to the win, earning a save percentage of 88.9 percent, stopping eight shots.

The defensive unit was nearly perfect, wreaking havoc on the Seahawks offense. Katie Curran was credited with two caused turnovers, while Lauren Mancini, Schuber, Courtney Szczesniak, Rice, Ashley Tack and Shaddock all getting credit for one caused turnover each. Â Curran also led the way with four ground balls, with Cullen picking up three.

The Green and Gold outmatched their counterparts in several categories, including shots, with a 25-16 edge and draws with a tally of 11-2. The Golden Eagles went 23-for-26 on clears on the day, and earned two free position shots.

The Golden Eagles advance to the Sweet 16 of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship, and will face No. 6 Franklin & Marshall College who defeated Mount Union College in the second round, 14-3. Salisbury College will host the regional round of action on May 21, times are yet to be determined.
