Week four SUNYAC fall Athletes of the Week named
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has named Athletes of the Week for week four of the 2014 fall season. Four SUNYAC institutions had athletes honored.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Mike ScherÂ
New Paltz, SR (New York, NY/The Beacon School)
Mike Scher was the top finisher for the Hawks at Saturday's University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth 8K Invite, placing 13th of 255 runners. The senior co-captain turned in a time of 25:45.7, averaging 5:09.2 a mile. The Hawks' team average time was 26:00, which was the best in school history as three runners finished sub-26:00, also a program first.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Terisa Woych
New Paltz, SR (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston)
Terisa Woych helped the Hawks place second of 38 teams at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth 5K Invite on Saturday, finishing as the highest Division III institute in the standings. Woych was the top finisher for New Paltz, claiming 7th place of 272 runners. She posted a school-record 5K time of 18:15.4, averaging 5:52.5 a mile. Woych's time bested the previous non-Saratoga Invitational time held by Nichole Wischoff (18:48.8 at 2011 Hamilton Invite).
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shelby UnderwoodÂ
Cortland, SO, F (Marathon, NY/Marathon)
Underwood tallied three goals in two games last week for the Red Dragons (4-2). In a 5-0 win at Houghton on Tuesday, Underwood scored Cortland's third goal early in the second half. In a 3-2 overtime setback at home versus #8 Montclair St. on Saturday, Underwood scored both of the goals for the Red Dragons. She tallied her first goal to tie the game at 1-1 just 1:32 into the second half and sent the game to OT with her second goal at 59:09. For the season, Underwood is second on the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Abigail Wentlent
Cortland, SR, B (Greene, NY/Greene)
Abigail Wentlent made three defensive saves in a 1-1 week for the 20th-ranked Red Dragons (4-2). She recorded a defensive save to help preserve the shutout in a 5-0 win at Houghton on Tuesday and registered two second-half defensive saves at home versus #8 Montclair St. on Saturday to help send the game into overtime, where Montclair St. earned a 3-2 win. For the season, Wentlent has four defensive saves.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Peter DiLorenzoÂ
Brockport, JR, F (Hicksville/Hicksville)
Peter DiLorenzo scored the game-winning goal that kept Brockport undefeated on the season 4-0-3 and improved its regular season unbeaten streak to 11 games dating back to last year.
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Vincent PellegrinoÂ
Oneonta, SR, GK (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin)
Vincent Pellegrino recorded two more shutouts this week against two nationally ranked teams, Rochester #20 and Rensselaer #14. Pellegrino has five shutouts on the season and a 0.16 GAA.
WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Chelsea Stahl Â
Brockport, SO, F (Brockport/Brockport)
Chelsea Stahl scored the game-winning goal against previously unbeaten and nationally ranked Union College in the 86th-minute of the game, which was only Brockport's second shot of the contest.
WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Laura ThompsonÂ
Brockport, SR, GK (Victor/Victor)
Laura Thompson shutout the #12 nationally ranked Union College for the 1-0 win, in a game that Brockport was able to only muster two shots.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emily FlohrÂ
Brockport, FR, OH (Liverpool/Liverpool)
Emily Flohr led Brockport to a 4-0 week, including a 3-0 homecoming record with 32 kills and 26 digs. She finished the week with a strong .359 hitting percentage.
