Caradonna, Malone named Molnar and Bogard recipients
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces that Geneseo's Jack Caradonna and Brockport's Rachel Malone have been selected as the 2013-2014 Molnar and Bogard Award winners as voted on by the conference athletic directors.
The Dr. Sam Molnar and Dr. Dolores Bogard awards are presented by the conference annually to a junior or senior athlete with the best combination of academic and athletic ability. The recipients have earned above a 3.3 grade point average and have received a varsity letter.
Caradonna, a senior captain for the Geneseo men's ice hockey team, has been selected as the Dr. Sam Molnar Award recipient. The Biology major was a CoSIDA Academic All-America last season and has been named to the Dean's list and President's list honoree five times each in his time at Geneseo. He has also been honored three-times on the SUNYAC Commissioner's and Academic All-Academic lists, along with receiving the SUNYAC Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2012-13 season.
On the ice, the defensemen helped his team tie the school record with a 23-7 record and a trip to the NCAA Division III semifinals last season. He tied for 13th nationally among defensemen with 20 points and fifth in the SUNYAC with 17 assists. He has previously been named to the First Team All-SUNYAC (2012-13) and Third Team All-SUNYAC (2013-14) throughout his career.
Geneseo Men's Ice Hockey Head coach Chris Schultz says, “Jack is a leader on and off the ice. He is a powerful captain when it comes to creating unity amongst teammates during good times and bad. He has an uncanny ability to motivate teammates to perform at a higher level than they typically are used to simply by role modeling effort and tenacity.”
Brockport's Rachel Malone, recipient of the Dr. Dolores Bogard Award, participates on the Golden Eagle cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field teams. She is a two-time Brockport Female Athlete of the Year award winner. Malone has also been named All-American, twice in Cross Country (2012 and 2013) and for her performance in the 10K at the 2014 Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The senior nursing major has been exemplary in the classroom during her time at Brockport. She has been on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Scholar All-America teams three times. She also has received SUNYAC Commissioner's List and Academic honors and was awarded SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award for outdoor track & field in 2013.
The men's award is named after the late Dr. Sam Molnar, who was the Director of Athletics at the State University College at Potsdam for over thirty years. He also coached various sports during this period. He served as SUNYAC President during the 1962-63 and 1963-64 years.
The women's award is named after Dr. Dolores Bogard, who was an administrator and coach at SUNY Cortland for over twenty years. She served as SUNYAC President during the 1987-88 year.
