SUNYAC picks athletes of the week for the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has picked athletes of the week for the week ending November 2. Fifteen athletes were honored in nine different sports with the addition of men's ice hockey this week.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Nick MarcantonioÂ
Cortland, Senior (Glen Falls)
Nick Marcantonio  won his second consecutive individual  SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Championship title Saturday finishing the eight kilometer course in 25:37.3. Marcantonio was named to the SUNAYC All-Conference Frist-Team.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Cassie Goodman
Geneseo, Senior (Phelps/Midlakes)
Senior Cassie Goodman won the individual SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Championship title and helped Geneseo to the team title for the 14th time in 15 years. Â Goodman finished the six kilometer course in 21:58.2.
FIELD HOCKEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Bailee Barrett (So)
Oneonta (Camden, NY/Camden)
In a 1-1 week for the Red Dragons Barrett registered three goals. Â All three of her goals came in a 3-1 win last Wednesday against No. 20 Utica College. Â Barrett is currently second on the team with 13 goals and four assists for 30 points.
FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Lindsay Farrell (SO)
Brockport, G (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker)
Farrell tied her season high with 17 saves and finished the season with 176 stops which is the fourth most in school history. Lindsay only allowed two goals in an OT loss to Houghton.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – David Rougeux (JR) Â
Brockport, Defense (Canastota/Oneida)
David Rougeux's first goal of the year couldn't have come at a bigger time. In overtime of Oswego and Brockport's SUNYAC quarterfinal game, Rougeux buried a pass just to the left of the post past the goalkeeper and into the net for the game-winner!
MEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Tyler Chauncey (SR) Â
Geneseo, B (Greece, N.Y./Greece Athena)
Senior back Tyler Chauncey was part of a Knights' backfield that held Potsdam to only three shots on goal and zero corner kicks in their 2-0 first round victory at Potsdam, Saturday. Chauncey, a 2014 captain, has started all 20 games on defense this season and played the entire match to help secure the win.
WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Schmitt, Danielle (SR) Â
Plattsburgh, Goalkeeper (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville)
Danielle Schmitt came up huge for Plattsburgh on Saturday as the Cardinals shutout #4 Oneonta on the road in a shootout to advance to the SUNYAC semifinals. Schmitt made nine saves through the first 110 minutes before making two back-to-back saves on the Red Dragons' first two shooters to help the Cardinals win 4-2 in a shootout. Schmitt finished the week with two shutouts as Plattsburgh defeated Norwich 6-0 on Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Mary Kelly (SR) Â
Cortland, Middle Hitter (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland)
Kelly recorded 40 kills (2.7 per set), a .474 attack percentage and 14 blocks (0.9 per set) during a 4-0 week for the Red Dragons. She finished with 15 kills and five blocks in a come-from-behind, five-set win over Houghton, followed by 10 kills (.562 attack pct.) and three blocks in a sweep of Utica and 10 kills (.526 attack pct.) and three blocks in a four-set win over Alfred as Cortland won all three of its matches at the Houghton Highlander Invitational. She was named to the all-tournament team. Kelly also had five kills and three blocks in a sweep of Elmira at home earlier in the week.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Jake Hewitt (FR) Â
Fredonia (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont)
Hewitt was a four-time winner Saturday during the Blue Devils home meet vs. Rochester Institute of Technology. He and three teammates started the afternoon with a stirring victory in the 200-yard medley relay, their winning time of 1:41.29 just .06 of one second faster than RIT. Hewitt's individual wins were more decisive -- by 13 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.38), by 9 seconds in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.42), and by 4 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.06). Each of those times was a season-best for Hewitt.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Jeff Matter (SO)
Fredonia (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora)
Matter remained unbeaten in 3-meter springboard competition after three meets with 281.20 points in Saturday's home meet against Rochester Institute of Technology. He also finished third in the 1-meter with 252.95 points.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Abigail Max (SR) Â
Geneseo (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford)
Max was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:57.54) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.54) while adding a leg to the winning 200 free relay (1:39.65) in the Knights' season-opening meet at Division-I Canisius, Saturday. The Golden Griffins won the meet, 137-105.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Meghan Bartlett (SO) Â
Fredonia (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown)
Bartlett remained unbeaten in 1-meter springboard diving this season -- 3 for 3 -- with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 263.80 points Saturday vs. Rochester Institute of Technology, her best mark of the season. She also was the 3-meter springboard winner with 253.00 points. She's won 5 of the 6 events she's entered so far. The Blue Devils defeated RIT, 176-122.

ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Kenny Neil (SO) Â
Oswego, Forward (Clarenville, N.F./Nepean Raiders)
Neil played an important role in the Lakers two SUNYAC wins this weekend. In the first game against Buff State on Friday, Neil scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of play to edge the Bengals 4-3. The sophomore nabbed a power play goal earlier in that game as well. Neil continued to be an offensive threat in Saturdays 10-2 win against Fredonia. The Clarenville native picked up another goal and an assist to conclude a four point weekend.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK - Jon Hall (JR) Â
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Stouffville Spirit)
Jon Hall had a strong opening weekend in a 1-1 start to the 2014-15 season against two ranked opponents. He made 35 saves in 4-2 loss to No. 9 Plattsburgh on Friday. He followed it up with one of the finest performances of his career, a career-high 53 saves (.930 save percentage) in a 5-4 upset of No. 15 Hobart on Saturday night. The victory ended Potsdam's eight-game (0-7-1) winless streak against the Statesmen. His 88 saves for the weekend were 20 more than any other SUNYAC goalie and give him a .917 save percentage for the young season.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Drew Weigman (FR) Â
Cortland, Goalie (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones)
In his first collegiate start, Weigman turned aside 44 shots, including all 16 he faced in the third period and five in overtime, as the Red Dragons skated to a 2-2 tie at Fredonia on Friday. Weigman registered a .957 save percentage and a 1.85 GAA in the game as Cortland earned a conference road point.
