SUNYAC honors athletes for performances during the week of Oct. 13-19
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected nine athletes of the week for the week ending October 20. Championship brackets will be determined as conference play wraps up by Saturday, October 25.
MALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Mike ScherÂ
New Paltz, SR (New York, NY/The Beacon School)
Scher recorded a time of 25:54 (5:13 mile pace) to place fourth overall and first for the Hawks at Saturday's Connecticut College 8K Invitational at Harkness Memorial State Park, bettering his mark at the 2013 Connecticut College Invite by 54 seconds. By virtue of finishing in the top-15, Scher earned All-Invitational honors. New Paltz ran with three regionally-ranked squads and one nationally-ranked program and bested all but one of the teams. The Hawks finished fifth of 18 teams with an average time of 26:45 which was better overall than Tufts University, the No. 31 team in the nation and No. 7 in the New England Region, according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Hawks also finished higher than the University of Mary Washington, ranked No. 10 in the South/Southeast Region.
FEMALE RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Cassie GoodmanÂ
Geneseo, SR (Phelps, N.Y./Midlakes)
Goodman won her third-consecutive race, placing first at the Inter-Regional Rumble, hosted by Oberlin, Saturday. She bested the 341-runner field by covering the six-kilometer circuit with a time of 22:02.2, which was eight seconds ahead of Oberlin's All-America duo of Lindsay Neal and Emma Lehman, who placed second and third, respectively. Goodman paced the fifth-ranked Knights to 54 points, out-distancing a field that included No. 7 Oberlin, No. 11 Mount Union, No. 12 Oneonta, No. 20 RIT, No. 27 Emory, No. 32 Ohio Wesleyan and No. 33 Carnegie Mellon, as well as Case Western (RV) and Allegheny (RV). Goodman also finished first at the Geneseo Invitational (Oct. 4) and the NCAA Division-III Pre-National Meet (Sept. 27). She was also the top Division-III finisher at Penn State's Spiked Shoe Invitational (Sept. 13).

Underwood led the nationally 20th-ranked Red Dragons (11-2, 5-0 SUNYAC) to a 6-0 win versus Geneseo on Friday, Cortland's seventh consecutive victory. Underwood tallied the first two goals of the game and assisted on Cortland's third goal, all in the first half, as the Red Dragons clinched the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament. For the season, Underwood leads the Red Dragons with 28 points on a team-high 12 goals and four assists.

Wentlent helped the nationally 20th-ranked Red Dragons (11-2, 5-0 SUNYAC) clinch the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament with a 6-0 win versus Geneseo on Friday. Wentlent led a defense that surrendered just two shots to the Knights and posted its fifth shutout in as many games in conference play. Wentlent also tallied her fourth goal of the season on a penalty stroke early in the second half.
MEN'S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Francesco CardilloÂ
Buffalo State, SR, MF (Tonawanda/St. Thomas Aquinas, ON)
The senior assisted on the Bengals first goal and then locked down the midfield as Buffalo State shutout Potsdam 2-0 on Friday. Then, Cardillo scored the game-tying goal with just three seconds remaining and assisted on the overtime game-winner in a 2-1 win over Plattsburgh on Saturday, keeping Buffalo State's playoff hopes alive.

Hein did not allow a goal in more than 247 minutes of action. He made eight saves in a 1-0 shutout at Alfred on Tuesday. He followed that up with a five-save 2-0 shutout win over Potsdam on Friday, and made six saves without allowing a goal in 67 minutes against Plattsburgh, including stopping a penalty kick. He left the game due to injury after being undercut by a Plattsburgh player who was issued a yellow card on the play. The Bengals went on to win the game 2-1 in overtime.

Parker recorded five points on two goals and one assist as Cortland posted a 1-0-1 record in SUNYAC play over the weekend. In a 3-0 win versus Brockport on Friday, Parker scored the game-winning goal in the 16th minute and added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute for the Red Dragons (6-6-2, 5-1-2 SUNYAC). In a 1-1 tie versus #24 Geneseo on Saturday, Parker assisted on the game-tying goal in the 82nd minute. For the season, Parker has eight points on three goals and two assists.

Walker helped the Red Dragons (6-6-2, 5-1-2 SUNYAC) post a 1-0-1 record in conference play last weekend. in a 3-0 win versus Brockport on Friday, Walker posted her fourth consecutive shutout, making seven saves. She followed that game with six saves in a 1-1 double-overtime tie versus #24 Geneseo on Saturday. For the two games, she recorded a 0.45 GAA, 13 saves and a .929 save percentage. Walker has a 5-1-2 record with a 0.59 GAA, an .889 save percentage and five shutouts this season.
VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Courtney PoirierÂ
Fredonia, FR, L/DS (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West)
Poirier set a school record with 42 digs in the Blue Devils' 3-2 win over Houghton. The previous record of 40 digs was held by Paula Baire from a match in 2005. Poirier's previous best output was 19 digs in a match earlier this season. The Blue Devils improved to 19-7 and take a 6-0 SUNYAC record into the final round of pool play this Friday and Saturday at Dods Hall.
