Brockport Captures SUNYAC Baseball Championship
CORTLAND – Brockport captured its first SUNYAC title since 2004 and its fifth overall, after severe weather shortened the post-season tournament. The Golden Eagles were declared the champions after Sunday’s elimination game between Oneonta and Cortland was canceled due to inclement weather.
Brockport defeated Plattsburgh 14-9 in the first game and advanced in the winner’s bracket with a 10-6 win over Oneonta on Nathan Parrino’s (Brockport, NY/Brockport) walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday.
In other games, Oneonta defeated Cortland 7-1 behind a complete game, three-hitter by junior Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake). While Cortland defeated Plattsburgh 13-5 as Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) went 4-for-5 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored.
Brockport, the lone team with a 2-0 record in the tournament, was declared the champion per SUNYAC bylaws and receives the league’s NCAA Div. III tournament automatic berth.
League rules stipulate that the tournament must be concluded by the end of the day Monday (May 10). However, league and school officials agreed that no team should play three games in one day, which could have happened if Cortland and Oneonta played on Monday and that winner defeated Brockport. Therefore, the tournament was officially declared finished by SUNYAC Commissioner Dr. Patrick Damore.
