2010 Baseball Annual Awards
The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its Baseball All-Conference teams for the 2010 season. Cortland junior Jason Simone (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) was named the 2010 Bob Wallace Player of the Year. Oneonta’s Dave Filak (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) was honored as the Don Axtell Pitcher of the Year while New Paltz’s Tom Pinnola (North Babylon, NY / North Babylon) was named the Clark Whited Rookie of the Year. New Paltz head coach Matt Griffiths was selected as the 2010 SUNYAC Walter Nitardy Coach of the Year.
Simone wins the league's most outstanding player award for the second straight season. The award is named after long-time Cortland standout head coach Robert H. “Sparky” Wallace, who coached the Red Dragons from 1958-83 and for whom Cortland’s baseball field is named. Simone is batting a team-high .466, the 20th-best batting average nationally in Div. III, with 10 doubles, three triples, two homers, 43 RBI and 19 stolen bases in 39 games. He is tied for the team lead in doubles, ranks second in steals and is third in RBI. Simone has struck out only four times in 153 total plate appearances.
Filak is 8-0 with a 1.82 earned run average. He has recorded 96 strikeouts in 59-1/3 innings of work to date and is holding opponents to a .175 batting average.
