SUNYAC Athletes of the Week - January 26, 2026
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SUNYAC selects its winter Athletes of the Week recognizing 16 student-athletes across eight sports and seven institutions for their notable performances during the week of January 19-25.
Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Lateef Johnson Jr., Canton
Johnson Jr. averaged 24.3 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.3 bocks per game shooting nearly 53% from the field in three SUNYAC games last week for the Roos. He opened the week with 17 points, 12 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists shooting 7-for-14 from th4e field in an 89-76 win against New Paltz on Tuesday. He exploded for 36 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and four steals shooting 14-for-25 from the field in a last second 85-83 loss at Fredonia on Friday. The 14 made field goals were the most for a Canton player in the D-III era and the 36 points were the second most. On Saturday he closed out the week with 20 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two assists shooting 8-for-16 from the field in another last minute 79-74 loss at Buffalo State. Johnson Jr.'s ranks first in the SUNYAC in rebounds per game (12.4), second in steals per game (2.4), second in blocks per game (1.8) and third in points per game (18.9).
Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Giavanna White-Principio, Oswego
White-Principio continued her great season helping the Lakers earn two more SUNAYC wins this week. She averaged 17.7 points and 14 rebounds across three games. She added 14 blocks, 4 assists, and 2 steals to the totals as well. She is currently the SUNAYC leader in rpg (14.1) and third in scoring at 15.8.
Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Matt McQuade, Oswego
The Lakers continued their strong season by adding two SUNYAC road wins this weekend. Team Captain McQuade started off friday with an assist against Skidmore. Then on Saturday at Plattsburgh, after the Lakers fell behind 4-1, McQuade boosted the Lakers back in front by adding 2 goals an another assist to earn a 5-4 road win.
Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week - Charles-Anthony Barbeau, Fredonia
Senior Barbeau made 77 saves as the Devils went 2-0 for the week. He made 41 saves and gave up two goals for a .953 save percentage in a 3-2 win over Cortland on Friday. The next afternoon, he stopped 36 shots giving up one goal for a .973 save percentage. Overall, he gave up three goals and had a .963 save percentage.
Men's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Cash Anderson, Fredonia
Freshman Cash Anderson led the Devils to a 2-0 week with wins over Cortland and Morrisville. In a 3-2 win over Cortland, he had a shorthanded goal. Versus the Mustangs, he had a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win. In two games, he accounted for three points.
Women's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Kira Cook, Cortland
Cook scored four goals in two games to lead the Red Dragons to a 2-0 weekend on the road, and also won 17-of-30 faceoffs (56.7%). The junior scored twice in a 5-1 road win at William Smith on Friday evening, netting the opening goal of the game just 78 seconds into the first period and later tallying the fifth Cortland goal in the third period. Cook also scored twice in a come-from-behind 5-4 victory at Buffalo State, scoring a pair of power-play goals for the first two Red Dragon goals to kickstart the comeback.
Women's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week - Magalie Parent, Potsdam
Parent helped the Bears to a weekend sweep of SUNYAC opponents with a 2.00 goals-against-average, .950 save percentage and 76 saves. On Friday, she stopped 40 shots in a 4-3 victory over Oswego State. She then made 36 saves in a 2-1 win over Canton on Saturday.
Women's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Kayla Doerre, Oswego
In two games this weekend for the Lakers, Doerre collected two points. She added an asssit on Friday at Potsdam and then another point in the form of a goal on Saturday at Plattsburgh. Doerre delivered a game clinching goal at 11:33 in the third to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead over ranked Plattsburgh and a big road win.
Men's Swimmer of the Week - Caden Traggiai, Penn State Altoona
Caden had three individual wins to help the Lions defeat non-conference opponents Elizabethtown and Juniata in a home tri-meet on Saturday afternoon. The senior took first in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (10:23.95), won the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:01.21), and prevailed in the 400 Yard IM (4:27.51).
Men's Diver of the Week - Kevin Kohlhoff, Cortland
Kohlhoff won both 1-meter diving (318.45 points) and 3-meter diving (284.50 points) in Cortland's 166.5-124.5 home dual win over Oswego on Saturday.
Women's Swimmer of the Week - Ella Garrow, Cortland
Garrow won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.35) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.08) in Cortland's 176-121 home dual win over Oswego on Saturday. The previous day she won the 100-yard freestyle (57.96) and swam the breaststroke leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team (1:57.95) in a 139-75 dual win at Oneonta.
Women's Diver of the Week - Aylssa Haberlack, Cortland
Haberlack posted an 11-dive score 401.90 points on the 1-meter board during Cortland's 139-75 dual win at Oneonta on Friday. The score was broken down into two events for the dual - she had the best six-dive score with a 237.60 and the second-best five-dive total at 164.30. The following day, Haberlack posted the top scores on both the 1-meter (234.40) and 3-meter (204.25) boards in a 176-121 home dual win over Oswego.
Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - Charles Cypress, Plattsburgh
Cypress delivered a record-breaking performance in the 300-meter dash as Plattsburgh State placed first at the St. Lawrence Invitational. He clocked a time of 35.27 seconds, setting new program, meet, and facility records, earning first place for the Cardinals.
Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week - Isaiah Brunache, Cortland
Brunache won two events in a six-team meet hosted by Ithaca College. He was first out of 30 competitors in the weight throw at 17.87 meters (58' 7.5") and finished first of 27 in the shot put at 15.14 meters (49' 8.25"). Both performances met AARTFC qualifying standards.
Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week - Kyra Pellegrino, Oswego
Pellegrino dominated the women's 5000m, capturing first place with a time of 18:20.78. Her winning effort not only secured valuable points for the Lakers, but also qualified her for regional competition and placed her third all-time in program history for the indoor event.
Women's Indoor Field Athelte of the Week - Hannah McMasters, Cortland
McMasters finished second out of 32 competitors in the weight throw (15.59 meters/51' 1.75") and sixth of 32 in the shot put (11.41 meters/37' 5.25") in a six-team meet hosted by Ithaca College. Her weight throw is an AARTFC qualifier and is the top performance in the SUNYAC this season.
