Geneseo Women Roll Past Competition at SUNYAC Championship
In perfect running conditions, the SUNY Geneseo women's cross country team dominated the rest of the field today in claiming its 13th conference title overall at Fortin Park in the Town of Oneonta. The Blue Knights scored 26 points as a team and had six of the top 15 finishers in winning for a fourth consecutive year.
The real race today turned out to be for second place, which went to host SUNY Oneonta, as they edged its rival from SUNY Cortland by three points. SUNY New Paltz was fourth and Fredonia State was fifth to round out the top-5 for 2013.
The top overall finisher was junior Kiera Wood of SUNY Geneseo, who crossed the line in a time of 22:01 for the 6K distance. Wood's performance earned her induction into the SUNYAC cross country Hall of Fame along with teammates Jackie Huben and Alyssa Knott. Huben finished third in today's race with a time of 22:07 while Knott was 12th in the race. Knott was inducted based on her third time finishing in the top-15 at the championships. Previously, Knott was 14th in 2011 and 2012.
Coming in as the runner-up this year was SUNY Oneonta senior Danielle Kennedy, who became the highest finisher ever for the Red Dragons at the championships. Kennedy, who was inducted into the SUNYAC cross country Hall of Fame in 2011, recorded her third straight year in the top-5. She led today's race for a good while and was just caught at the end by Wood. Kennedy finished with a time of 22:06.
Rounding out the top-5 finishers for the women to claim First Team All-Conference honors were junior Rachel Malone of Brockport and senior Kelley Driscoll of Plattsburgh.
Earning Second Team honors were finishers 6 thru 10 and included, SUNY Geneseo juniors Joanna Castrogivanni and Cassie Goodman in 6th and 7th place respectively, senior Emily Cotey of SUNY Cortland in 8th, freshman Sara Rosenweig of SUNY Geneseo in 9th and senior Kim Foltz of Fredonia in 10th.
Runners 11 thru 15 earned Third Team All-Conference honors and they were, senior Amanda Wolfer of New Paltz in 11th, Knott in 12th, junior Catherine Ehmann of Plattsburgh in 13th, sophomore Kerri Culhane of SUNY Cortland in 14th and freshman Mary Kate Bida of Oneonta in 15th.
