Cortland Claims SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Championship
In a classic battle between two nationally ranked squads, it was SUNY Cortland that came out on top today to capture the 2013 SUNYAC championship held at Fortin Park in the Town of Oneonta. The Red Dragons posted a near perfect score in snapping SUNY Geneseo's string of five straight championships. For Cortland, it was its 14th overall cross country championship, which is the most all-time on the men's side. It was also the Red Dragons first title since 2008.
The Red Dragons and Blue Knights battled for the entire 8K distance, but it was Cortland that put runners in first, second, fourth, sixth and seventh while having its final two runners in at ninth and eleventh.
The overall winner was SUNY Cortland junior Nick Marcantonio, who ran a time of 24:51, which was the fastest time at the championship since 2010. Marcantonio, who went into the SUNYAC cross country Hall of Fame in 2011, was nine seconds ahead of teammate, and fellow Hall of Famer, senior Cody Amengual.
SUNY Geneseo juniors Ryan Moynihan and Cohen Miles-Rath broke up Cortland's bid for a perfect score with third and fifth place finishes respectively. Miles-Rath, by virtue of his top-5 finish was inducted into the SUNYAC cross country Hall of Fame.
Joining Miles-Rath in this year's class were SUNY Cortland runners, seniors Casey Austin, Pat Fannon and Tim Lee and junior Jarred Iacovelli.
Marcantonio, Amegual, Moynihan, Austin and Miles-Rath were the top-5 overall finishers and earned First Team All-Conference honors.
Second Team All-Conference honors went to Fannon (6th), Iacovelli (7th), SUNY Geneseo sophomore Brendan Wortner (8th), Lee (9th) and Fredonia State junior Zakk Hess (10th).
Earning Third Team All-Conference honors were SUNY Cortland junior Arturo Salas (11th), SUNY Cortland sophomore Joe Ray (12th), SUNY Cortland freshman Gabe Rodriquez (13th), SUNY Geneseo junior Sean Fischer and SUNY Geneseo freshman Alex Kramer (15th).
