SUNYAC Runners Set to Compete at NCAA Division III Championship

INDIANAPOLIS -- The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced that four teams and two individuals from the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) qualified for the 2013 Division III Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships in Hanover, Ind. on Saturday, November 23, 2013.

Following the NCAA regional championship meet, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) recognized All-Region honorees in Division III. A total of 560 student-athletes earned the distinction by finishing among the top 35 individual finishers at one of the eight regional sites across the country.

Combined, 21 men and women from the SUNYAC were named NCAA Division III All-Region honorees. Geneseo led the pack with eight runners. Cortland was a close second with seven honorees. Followed by SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Plattsburgh with two runners apiece. New Paltz and Fredonia State rounded out the SUNYAC with one runner each.

After Saturday's regional meets, 16 automatic qualifiers along with 16 at-large selections will make up the 32 team field of men and women. A total of 56 individual qualifiers were added to each field.
Cortland earned an automatic qualifier when they won the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Championship. A feat they have not experienced since back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2009. Red Dragon runner Nick Marcantonio (25:03.5) edged out New York University's Dylan Karten (25:04.4) by less than a second for the individual regional title.

The Geneseo men were one of two teams from the Atlantic Region to receive at-large bids. Juniors, Cohen Miles-Rath (25:05.3) and Ryan Moynihan (25:19.3) led the Knights, finishing third and sixth respectively. The team will join St. Lawrence, as well as Atlantic Regional Champion Cortland and runner-up NYU in the race.

In the women's pack, Geneseo and SUNY Oneonta received at-large bids, while The College at Brockport and Plattsburgh State earned individual automatic qualifiers a piece.
The SUNYAC women's team champion Knights placed fourth in the Atlantic Regionals. This marks the 14th-straight season the Geneseo women have qualified for the NCAA Championship, currently the longest streak in the country.

For the SUNY Oneonta women, they are having a season for the record books, literally. Upon finishing second in the SUNYAC championships and fifth in the Atlantic Regionals, both record highs, they learned of their selection to the NCAA Division III Championships. This is the first ever NCAA berth in the program's 40 plus year history.

Rachel Malone and Kelley Driscoll each earned individual automatic qualification nods.  Malone was the top overall SUNYAC runner with a fifth place finish at Regionals. The Brockport junior will make her second appearance at the championship. Senior Kelley Driscoll has been named an All-SUNYAC First Team member in addition to an All-NCAA Division III Atlantic Region performer. As a freshman, the Cardinal runner led her squad to a 30th place finish in Nationals, and has since improved her post season stats. Driscoll will finish out her storied athletic career with her third and final appearance at the NCAA Championship.

Hanover College will host the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships at its nationally renowned L.S. Ayres Complex cross country course, L.S. Ayres Complex, in Hanover, Ind. The women's race will begin at 11 a.m. ET followed by the men's race at 12:30 p.m. ET. The meet will be broadcast live online on NCAA.com
