Luis Misla Named NCBWA Division III National Pitcher of the Week
Cortland Sports Information Department
Cortland senior pitcher Luis Misla (Tampa, FL/Riverview) has been named the Division III National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the week ending April 27.
In addition, Misla earned a spot on the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week for the week ending March 30. He was one of four starting pitchers selected to that team, which consists of the top players for the week, by position, among all Division III schools.
Misla set a Cortland school record with 19 strikeouts in the Red Dragons' 5-1 win at Plattsburgh last Friday, April 25. He broke the previous school mark of 17 strikeouts and has now struck out 10 or more batters six times this season. His 19 strikeouts are the most by a Division III pitcher this season.
Misla took a no-hitter two outs into the ninth inning before allowing three singles. He escaped the jam to earn his eighth win of the season. The only run he allowed was unearned without a hit in the fifth inning.
In 10 starts this season, Misla is 8-2 with a 1.21 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. In 59 and two thirds innings he's allowed 40 hits and 20 walks and has struck out 98 batters. Opponents are hitting .185 against him.
Cortland (25-11, 14-3 SUNYAC) has won 15 of its last 16 games. The Red Dragons current lead the SUNYAC standings and can clinch the regular-season title with a win at Canton on Sunday in the final league contest of the year, or through other scenarios depending on weekend outcomes by New Paltz and Oswego, which are tied for second at 11-4. Cortland will host Scranton in a non-league game Saturday at noon.
