GENESEO, N.Y. - Five teams remain after the first day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) double elimination softball tournament, Thursday at Geneseo's Vic Raschi Softball Field.
Top seed and host, Geneseo defeated No. 6 Plattsburgh, 4-3, while No. 2 Cortland shutout No. 5 Fredonia, 6-0. In the third game of the day New Paltz beat Oneonta, 8-2. With the loss the Cardinals and Devils had to face off in an elimination game later in the day where Fredonia was sent home after losing, 6-4, ending the season 14-26 overall.
Geneseo will take on Oneonta at 9 a.m. Friday followed by Cortland vs. New Paltz at 11 a.m.
Elite 20
The SUNYAC Elite 20, an award modeled after the NCAA ELITE 90 program, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. This year's softball honoree Marissa Nagel from Oneonta was recognized at the SUNYAC softball tournament Thursday. Nagel holds a 3.96 GPA as an adolescence education/mathematics major.
