2021 SUNYAC Volleyball Top Awards Announced
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its 2021 Women's Volleyball All-Conference teams and individual awards as voted on by the conference coaches. Cortland's Hannah Southcott, Carly Haegele and Erin Glickert have been honored with the Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively. Brockport's Megan Loomis has been voted the Rookie of the Year.
Player of the Year - Hannah Southcott, Cortland
Southcott leads the league with 367 kills (3.95/set) and 394.5 points (4.2/set). She helped lead her team to a conference title after going undefeated (9-0) in regular-season play. Southcott was named the SUNYAC PrestoSports Offensive Athlete of the Week four times this season and was named to the All-Tournament team. The Red Dragons earned an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament and will travel to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to play U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Friday, November 12.
Defensive Player of the Year - Carly Haegele, Cortland
Haegele leads the conference with 528 digs (4.98/set) and is second with 48 aces overall. She was named to the All-Tournament team after Cortland defeated New Paltz and Geneseo to capture the 2021 SUNYAC league crown. Haegele was honored as the PrestoSports Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week three times this season and she was also named the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year in 2019. Cortland will continue its season in the NCAA Tournament beginning Friday.
Rookie of the Year - Megan Loomis, Brockport
Loomis finished her rookie year fifth in the conference with 3.12 kills per set (184 total) and sixth with 3.6 points per set (213 total) overall. She also totaled 21 aces and 69 digs. Brockport finished the regular-season ranked No. 3 (6-3) and advanced to the conference semifinals, but lost to Geneseo, 3-2.
Coach of the Year - Erin Glickert, Cortland
In her third season at Cortland, Glickert led her team to a No. 1 seed after ending the regular-season undefeated in conference play, 9-0. She coached her team to the program's first SUNYAC championship title since 2012 and 20th overall. Glickert had five athletes earn All-Conference this season including the Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the year. With an overall record of 26-3 so far, the Red Dragons will make their 25th NCAA Division III tournament appearance when they face U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the first round on Friday, November 12.
