#1 Red Dragons to Host Mt. Union or Keuka in NCAA Second Round May 10
The unbeaten and nationally top-ranked SUNY Cortland women's lacrosse team will host either the University of Mount Union (Ohio) or Keuka College in an NCAA Division III tournament second-round game on Saturday, May 10, at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. Game time is to be announced. Mount Union (15-2) will host Keuka (16-2) in a first-round game on Wednesday, May 7.
Cortland will enter the game with a 19-0 record. The Red Dragons registered their first undefeated regular season since the 2006 season and only their second overall in the NCAA Div. III tournament era (1985-present).
The winner of Cortland's game will play in a four-team regional on Saturday-Sunday, May 17-18, at a site to be announced. The Division III national semifinals and finals will be held May 24-25 at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.
Under sixth-year head coach Kathy Taylor, the Red Dragons earned a berth into the 36-team NCAA field after capturing their 16th straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) tournament title. Cortland won the league crown with a 14-3 win versus Geneseo in this past Saturday's championship game. The Red Dragons will be making their 16th straight NCAA appearance and 18th overall.
Last season, Cortland advanced to the Division III "final four" for the third straight year with wins over Keuka, 23-2, Adrian, 21-3 and Bowdoin, 14-4, before losing to Trinity College (Conn.) in the semifinals, 8-6. Cortland also lost to Trinity in the 2012 semifinals, 7-5, and fell to Gettysburg in the 2011 semifinals, 13-11.
Cortland has played in at least the NCAA second round each of the last 15 years, including "final four" showings in 2013, 2012, 2011 and 2006 and quarterfinal appearances in 2001, 2002 and 2005.
Cortland is 8-0 this season versus teams ranked in the top 20 nationally at the time of the game. The Red Dragons beat defending national champion and then top-ranked Salisbury, 12-8, in Cortland April 20. Cortland has won 53 straight home games dating back to an 8-7 loss to Hamilton College on March 23, 2010.
