Cortland's Lavelle and Geremia named National Defender and Attacker of the Year
SUNY Cortland senior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) has been named the national Division III Defender of the Year and sophomore Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) has been selected as the national Division III Attacker of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). The awards were presented at the IWLCA All-America Banquet on Saturday, June 7, in Valley Forge, Pa.
In addition, Geremia has been honored as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Mid-Atlantic Offensive Player of the Year, and is one of three Red Dragons on the All-ECAC first team along with Lavelle and junior midfielder Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington).
Lavelle is the national Defender of the Year for the second straight season. In 23 starts this spring she led Cortland with 48 caused turnovers and 40 ground balls. She also won 10 draw controls and assisted on one goal. In most instances, Lavelle was assigned to guard the top offensive threat on the opposing team.
Geremia, also a starter in all 23 games, led Cortland with 124 points on 54 goals and 70 assists. She ranked third nationally in Div. III in points scored and sixth in assists. Geremia has scored more points in her first two collegiate seasons than any player in NCAA Div. III history. She has career totals of 116 goals and 144 assists for 260 points, putting her on pace to break NCAA Div. III records for career points (500 by Ashley Hansbury of Curry from 2008-11) and assists (240 by Kendyl Clarkson of Buffalo State from 2009-12).
Hayes-Hurley registered 51 points and eight assists for 59 points in 23 starts. She ranked fourth on the Red Dragon squad in both goals and total points. Hayes-Hurley also finished with a team-high 71 draw controls along with 27 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.
Cortland finished the season with a 22-1 record. The Red Dragons advanced to the NCAA Div. III semifinals for the fourth straight season before falling to Trinity (Conn.), 8-7. Over the past four seasons, Cortland has posted a combined win-loss record of 84-7.
