#1 Red Dragons Fall to #3 Trinity, 8-7, in NCAA Div. III Semifinals

GETTYSBURG, PA – The nationally third-ranked Trinity College women's lacrosse team held top-ranked Cortland scoreless for 29 minutes, 56 seconds spanning the first and second halves and held off a late Red Dragon rally to earn an 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2014 NCAA Div. III Women's Lacrosse Championships hosted by Gettysburg College. Cortland had its school-record 22-game winning steak snapped and finished 22-1 on the season and tied for third nationally for the fourth consecutive year. The Bantams improved to 19-2 and reached their third straight title game where they will face the winner of Salisbury vs. Amherst.

Sophomore Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) led the Red Dragons with four points on one goal and three assists. She finished the season with 124 points on 54 goals and 70 assists. Freshman Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) contributed two goals and one assist, sophomore Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) tallied a pair of goals and juniors Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) each scored a goal.

Sophomore goalie Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) made nine saves, including six in the first half, and forced two turnovers. Hayes-Hurley and Ashley Gentile won three draw controls each, while senior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two ground balls and four caused turnovers and senior Heather Casey (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) registered two caused turnovers.

Senior Shea Kusiak (Longmeadow, MA) paced Trinity with two goals and one assist. Freshman Clare Lyne (Concord, MA/Middlesex School) scored twice, senior Kathleen Timmons (Branford, CT/Portsmouth Abbey) contributed one goal and one assist and juniors Caroline Hayes (Greenland, NH/Phillps Exeter Academy) and Renee Olsen (Ridgewood, NJ) and sophomore Abby McQuillan (Medfield, MA) each netted one goal.

Sophomore goalie Emily Mooney (New York/Kent) stopped eight shots. Sophomore Ashley Stewart (Dover, MA/Dover-Sherborn) registered five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Hayes added three ground balls and three draw controls and sophomore Martha Griffin (Exeter, NH/Phillips Exeter Academy) chipped in with three draws.

Gentile opened the scoring 1:13 into the game with a free-position goal to give Cortland a 1-0 lead. Timmons tied the game just over four minutes later with an unassisted effort. The Bantams grabbed their only lead of the first half when Kusiak converted a free position at 23:03. The Red Dragons answered with a three-goal run to open up a 4-2 advantage. Gentile scored her second of the game off Geremia's assist at 22:22. Hayes-Hurley followed with a free-position score at 14:37 before Ohberg found the top corner with an unassisted effort at 13:30. Lyne stopped the run when she scored at 6:06 with Trinity up a player. Geremia recorded her second assist of the game on Ohberg's second goal of the contest at 4:48 to make it a 5-3 game. Hayes closed the scoring in the first half at 2:36 and Cortland held a 5-4 lead at the break.

The Bantams tallied the first four goals of the second half to build an 8-5 lead, while keeping Cortland off the scoreboard for nearly 30 minutes. Olsen tied the game at 5-5 at 27:51 of the second. Kusiak evetually gave Trinity back the lead over 12 minutes later with a free-position goal at the 15:06 mark. Lyne netted her second the game at 10:53, and McQuillan made it an 8-5 score with 9:07 to play.

Shorly after McQuillan's goal, the Red Dragons were whistled for the fifth of their six yellow cards in the game and went down one player with Trinity in possession. The Red Dragons eventually forced a turnover and Geremia took advantage with her goal at 4:52 to cut the lead to 8-6. The Bantams won the ensuing draw and ran two minutes off the clock before Lavelle forced a turnover. Cortland, however, lost possession but forced a bad pass by Trinity to get the ball back. Geremia collected her third assist of the game on Farrell's goal right in front at 1:21 to pull Cortland to within 8-7. Hayes-Hurley secured the draw control for Cortland and the ball ended up in Geremia's stick. The sophomore made a move toward the cage and was awarded a free position from the left side with 32 seconds remaining. On the restart, Mooney denied Geremia's attempt to tie the game and Trinity was able to run out the clock and seal the win.
