SUNYAC Athletes of the Week selected
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its Athletes of the Week going into the Swimming and Diving Championships week and the final week of regular season.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Brett Hope (JR) Â
Buffalo State, F, Blenheim, ON/Blenheim
The junior economics and finance major tallied seven points in a weekend sweep against Fredonia that clinch the Bengals' fifth-consecutive SUNYAC playoff berth. Hope had a goal and two assists in Friday's 3-1 home win, and then had a goal and three assists in a 6-2 win at Fredonia on Saturday.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Nominee: Jon Hall (JR)
Potsdam, Goalie (Dexter, N.Y./Â Stouffville Spirit)
Hall recorded two more victories on the weekend to help the Bears sweep into the playoffs. He stopped 30 shots in Friday's 7-2 win at Morrisville and equaled the task in the playoff clinching 3-1 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday. On the weekend he recorded a 1.50 goals-against-average and a .952 save percentage. The wins were Hall's ninth and 10th of the season, making him the first Potsdam goalie with double digit victories in 12 seasons.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Dylan Vander Esch (FR) Â
Potsdam, Forward (San Jose, Calif./Hartford Wolfpack)
Vander Esch had another big weekend for the surging Bears with five more points. In Potsdam's 7-2 victory at Morrisville on Friday, the freshman recorded a goal and two assists. On Saturday against the Mustangs, he scored the game-winner and added another assist as the Bears clinched a playoff spot.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gordon Lyons (SR)
Geneseo, F (Amherst, N.Y./Canisius)
Lyons keyed Geneseo's 3-0 week in SUNYAC play that included 33 points and 15 rebounds in a 78-72 victory at Buffalo State and 27 points, 14 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals in an 87-67 victory over visiting Oneonta on Saturday. The nation's leading rebounder moved into third place on Geneseo's all-time scoring list with 1,544 points to date.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shannon McGinnis (SR)Â
Geneseo, Forward (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda)
Last Tuesday, McGinnis led the Knights with 23 points, 15 rebounds and six assists in a 76-50 win at Buffalo State. On Friday, McGinnis totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season in a 74-61 victory over New Paltz. In the 65-52 win against Oneonta on Saturday, McGinnis grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Luke Potash (JR)Â
Plattsburgh (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee HS)
At the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, Luke Potash tied the school record of 22.27 seconds in the 200-meter dash. His time currently ranks as the fifth-best time in the ECAC and puts him in a tie for the 11th-fastest time among all Division III athletes nationally.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Whitman Oehler-Marx (SO) Â
Brockport, (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz)
Whitman Oehler-Marx finished ahead of more than 20 different collegiate athletes in the pole vault event at the Susquehanna Invitational, finishing second overall with a height of 4.85 meters.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jess Huber (JR)  Plattsburgh (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown HS)
Jess Huber broke her own school record in both the 60-meter (7.79 seconds) and 200-meter (24.66 seconds) dashes on Friday at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Her time in the 200-meter is currently the fastest posted time nationally among all Division III athletes by 0.78 seconds. Huber was the top Division III finisher in both of her events.
INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jazlyn Porter (JR) Â
Buffalo State (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls)
Porter posted the 13th best long jump this season at 5.48 meters, finishing third behind two non-Division III competitors at the Molloy Invitational on Friday. She also won the 400-meter dash with the 10th-best DIII time this year at 58.05 seconds.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Derek Secord (FR) Â
Geneseo (Lockport, N.Y/Â Lockport)
Secord won the 50 freestyle (21.84) and the 100 freestyle (48.84) at the Ithaca Invitational on Saturday.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Melinda King (FR) Â
Geneseo (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township)
King won two individual events and swam on a winning relay to lead the Knights at the Ithaca Invitational, Saturday. She swept the 100 (1:00.68) and 200 (2:16.50) butterfly events while teaming with sophomore Alayna Mlodozeniec, junior Caroline Russo and sophomore Julia Pucciarelli to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:48.29).
