SUNYAC athletes of the week announced for the week ending Dec. 14
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its athletes of the week for the week ending December 14. There are 13 athletes from six different institutions honored this week.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Jake Hewitt (FR)
Fredonia (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont)
Hewitt was a double winner Dec. 13 in the Blue Devils' home meet vs. NCAA Division 1 Canisius College. He was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.74 and won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.40. Hewitt also finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:10.89), behind three swimmers from Canisius.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK – Jeff Matter (SO)
Fredonia (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora)
Matter finished second in both diving events Dec. 13 against NCAA Division 1 Canisius. His second-place scores were 280.50 points in the 1-meter and 279.10 points in the 3-meter. The 1-meter score is an NCAA provisional qualifier.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK – Stephanie  Rosa (SR)
Fredonia (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg)
Rosa won two events and participated in two others Dec. 13 during the Blue Devils' home meet vs. NCAA Division 1 Canisius. She was the winner of the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.62, and a winner of the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.81. In addition, she swan as part of Fredonia's second-place 200-yard medley relay and was fifth individually in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.62).

FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Heather Colby (SR)
Fredonia (Owego, N.Y./Owego)
Colby was the 3-meter springboard winner with a score of 255.30 points during the Blue Devils' Dec. 13 home meet vs. Canisius. She also finished second in the 1-meter with 231.75 points.

ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Salkeld (JR)
Buffalo State, F (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland)
The junior business major had a hand in the first four goals of the game in a 5-3 victory over Johnson & Wales on Saturday, scoring twice and assisting on two others. Salkeld leads the Bengals with 11 points in 11 games, including five goals and six assists. goals.

ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Jeff Flagler (JR)
Fredonia, Goaltender (Owen Sound, Ont./West Hill)
Flagler's 37 saves help lift Fredonia to a 2-1 home win Friday over Johnson & Wales in the final game of the first semester. Flagler made several difficult stops, including two during a 5-on-3 Blue Devil penalty kill early in the first period. His 37th save came after J&W won an offensive end draw with two seconds left and got off a blast just before the final horn. Flagler's stat line so far this season: 1-2-1 record with a 2.84 goals-against average and .920 save percentage. Prior to coming to Fredonia, he played for the Walkerton Juniors.

ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jason Zaleski (FR)
Buffalo State, F (Scranton, PA/Scranton)
The rookie forward scored three times in Buffalo State's 5-3 non-conference victory over Johnson & Wales. Zaleski is second on the team in scoring with nine points on five goals and four assists after his first collegiate hat trick.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gordon Lyons (SR)
Geneseo, F (Amherst, N.Y./Canisius)
Lyons scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his seventh-straight double-double to start the season and lead the Knights to an 80-77 victory over visiting Medaille, Monday night. Ranked first nationally in rebounding (13.7 RPG), ninth in scoring (24.1 PPG) and 22nd in FG% (64.1), Lyons connected on 13-of-19 shots to move into seventh-place on Geneseo's career scoring list with 1,260 points to date.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Heather Hebert (JR)
Oswego, G (Hilton/Hilton)
Hebert recorded a double-double as she helped the Lakers edge Cazenovia 66-65 on the road on Friday. Hebert set a personal best collecting 23 rebounds, including 14 on the defensive glass. The junior also shot 54 percent from the field totaling 15 points on the night.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Zakk Hess (SR)
Fredonia (Newark, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott)
Hess finished first in one event, second in another, at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala. He won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:40.87 on Dec. 6. The previous night, he finished second in the 5,000 meters in 15:01.44. The runner who finished first was running unattached, hence, Hess was the first collegiate finisher in the 5K. Both his times at Kent were collegiate bests for Hess. Nationally he is ranked fourth in the 3,000 meters and sixth in the 5,000 meters in Division III.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Andre Green (SR)
Cortland (Watertown, N.Y./Indian River)
Green finished second in the long jump and was the first collegiate finisher in the long jump at the Cornell Greg Page Relays Dec. 6. His distance of 6.94 meters (22' 9.25") is presently the third best in the nation in Div. III.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Rachel Malone (SR)
Brockport (Fairport, NY/Fairport)
Malone won the 3,000 meter race with a Brockport facility record time of 10:16.90. She currently ranks third nationally in Division III in this event.

INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Taylor Hudson (SR)
Cortland (Victor, N.Y./Victor)
Hudson won the long jump and finished seventh in the high jump, both with ECAC-qualifying performances, at the Cornell Greg Page Relays Dec. 6. Her long jump of 5.56 meters (18' 3") currently ranks first nationally in Div. III and her high jump of 1.60 meters (5' 3") currently ranks ninth.
