SUNYAC Athletes of the Week selected for the week ending April 5
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its spring athletes of the week for the week of March 30-April 5. Twelve athletes from seven institutions were honored in different sports.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jordan Giller (JR) Â
Oswego, 1B (Toronto, Ontario/William Lyon Mckenzie)
Giller demonstrated his skills at the plate this week, going 9-for-17 (.529) through Oswego's five victories. The junior's best outing came during the second game of a doubleheader against New Paltz on Saturday. Giller went a perfect 3-for-3, recording a double and a triple. He ended the five-game stretch with 7 RBI, five runs-scored, four doubles, one triple and five walks The Toronto native never struck out while batting as well. In the field, Giller manned first base where he notched 42 putouts throughout the five contests.Â
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Zack Lander (SR) Â
Brockport (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili)
Zack Lander finished with a career-high 14 strikeouts for the most strikeouts in a single game since 2008 for Brockport to close out a series sweep against Oneonta on Monday. Lander held the Red Dragons offense in check Monday while keeping the hitters off balance allowing only three hits and three walks during the complete game shutout.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Joanna Bardak (SR) Â
Buffalo State, LF (Amherst, NY/Amherst)
Bardak hit .643 (9 of 14) with four doubles, two triples, a home run, four RBIs, six runs scored and two stolen bases in a perfect 4-0 SUNYAC weekend. She was 3 for 3 with double and a two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the Bengals to a 5-3 extra-inning win over Plattsburgh in the first game on Friday. She was also 4 for 4 with two doubles and a triple in a 13-7 victory in the first game against Potsdam on Saturday. She had at least one hit in all four games and is now on a six-game hitting streak.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK - Kelsey Gannett (SR) Â
Fredonia (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott)
The Blue Devils had a 6-0 week against three conference opponents, with Gannett posting a 4-0 mark with a 2.04 earned run average. She struck out 33 batters and walked only six over 24 innings pitched. Opponents batted .185 against her. Among Gannett's victories was a two-hit shutout of Potsdam in a game which she registered 12 strikeouts, tied for fourth most in a single game by a Blue Devil pitcher. She leads all SUNYAC pitchers with 59 strikeouts and is tied for the conference lead with five wins (5-2). The 6-0 start by the Blue Devils matches the best start in program history.
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nick Giampaolo (SR) Â
Oswego, M (Setauket/Ward-Melville)
Giampoalo notched eight points in Oswego's two routs over Elmira College and Alfred State. In Elmira's win on Tuesday, the senior had two goals and two assists en route to a 16-6 win over the Soaring Eagles. Giampaolo continued to spark the offense against Alfred State, this time scoring a hat-trick and assisting on one as well. The Setauket native also picked up four groundballs in each game and recorded three caused turnovers on the week.
MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Matt Massaria (JR) Â
Plattsburgh (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park HS)
Junior netminder Matt Massaria turned in another pair of impressive efforts between the pipes to help the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team match its best start in program history. In a road tilt against St. Lawrence on Wednesday afternoon, the Floral Park, N.Y., product made 12 saves in an 11-7 win which was the second in program history and second straight over the Saints who were receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll. Returning home for the first time since March 11 on Saturday, Massaria withstoof a 38-shot attack by SUNY Geneseo and turned aside 13 potential goals in 57 minutes of action which helped the Cardinals rip the Knights 16-6. Saturday's win marked the biggest win margin in program history over SUNY Geneseo and upped the Cardinals' record to 9-3 and 2-0 in SUNYAC play. Massaria's save percentage of .636 ranks second in the SUNYAC and his play has put the Cardinals' team goals against average to 7.5 which is the second-lowest figure in the SUNYAC.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emma Hayes-Hurley (SR)
Cortland, Midfield (Huntington, NY/Huntington)
Hayes-Hurley helped guide the 5th-ranked Red Dragons to a 3-0 record last week as they improved to 9-1 on the season. She totaled 17 points on 15 goals and two assists, seven ground balls, 35 draw controls and three caused turnovers. In a 19-5 victory at Potsdam on Tuesday, Hayes-Hurley tallied three goals and one assist and recorded three ground balls, nine draws and one caused turnover. She followed up with five goals and one assist, a career-best 12 draws, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in a 19-4 home win versus St. John Fisher. Hayes-Hurley completed the week with a career highs of seven goals and 14 draws as the Red Dragons defeated 17th-ranked Geneseo, 17-7, at home. Hayes-Hurley is currently ranked third in Div. III with 8.20 draws per game and is tied for the team lead with 38 points on 33 goals and five assists.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Nicole Burrows (FR) Â
Fredonia (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker)
Burrows had 18 saves in two Blue Devil wins last week, 11-8 at Brockport and 11-10 at home over Oswego. She has been in goal for every minute of Fredonia's 10 games this season. She has a goals-against average of 8.70 with a .466 save percentage.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jarred Iacovelli (SR) Â
Cortland (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional)
Iacovelli finished fourth out of 24 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Princeton University Sam Howell Invitational. His time of 9:15.59 ranks third nationally and is an ECAC qualifier.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Dawan Jones (FR) Â
Cortland (Buffalo, N.Y./Tapestry Charter)
Jones placed second of 21 in the triple jump and third of 36 in the long jump at the Ramapo Roadrunner Invitational, both with ECAC-qualifying distances. His triple jump of 14.03 meters (46' 0.5") ranks sixth nationally, and he registered a long jump of 6.68 meters (21' 11").
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Rachael Shine (SO) Â
Oneonta (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)
Shine picked up where she left off from the indoor season where she earned All-American Honors in the 800-meter run. This past Friday at the Sam Howell Invitational hosted by Princeton, she won the 800, competing amongst runners from Division I. Her time of 2:09.91 not only broke the Oneonta record, but broke the SUNYAC record of 2:11.25 set in 1991. The time is currently the fastest in Division III. Shine now holds the conference record for both the indoor and outdoor 800.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Taylor Hudson (SR) Â
Cortland (Victor, N.Y./Victor)
Hudson won the long jump and finished second in the high jump at the Ramapo College Roadrunner Invitational. She placed first of 44 in the long jump with an ECAC distance of 5.61 meters (18' 5") that ranks ninth nationally. In the high jump, she tied for the best height at 1.68 meters (5' 6") but finished second due to misses at that height. She ranks fourth nationally with that ECAC qualifier. Hudson also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.00) and ninth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.46), both with ECAC times.
