SUNYAC announces Athletes of the Week for the week ending April 12
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selects twelve athletes in the six conference spring sports as Athletes of the Week for the week of April 6-12, 2015.
BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ricky Mendiola (SR) Â
Fredonia, 1B (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South)
The Blue Devils won three of four conference games with Mediola leading the way offensively. He was 9 of 14 for a .643 batting average in the four games. His nine hits included a double, a triple, and a homer, which helped boost his slugging percentage to 1.143 (16 total bases in 14 at-bats). He was part of three scoring rallies in a 9-7 win at Brockport, and two rallies in the Saturday win over New Paltz. He was hit by a pitch to start a four-run game winning rally in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader vs. New Paltz. Defensively, he handled 32 chances with just one error. Mendiola's .407 batting average is best among Blue Devil regulars.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Scott Orr (JR)
Plattsburgh (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville HS)
For the second time in as many starts, Plattsburgh State junior Scott Orr completely shut down a conference opponent, hurling a nine-inning shutout in a 2-0 Plattsburgh State win at The College at Brockport on Saturday afternoon. Orr, who hails from Baldwinsville, N.Y., gave up just five hits, fanned six batters and didn't allow a Brockport batter to reach beyond first base in the win. In his latest triumph, which brings his record to 4-1, the junior lowered his ERA to 2.14 which ranks third in the SUNYAC. He becomes just the fifth Plattsburgh State pitcher ever to record two shutouts in a single season.
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Fallon Spriggs (JR)
New Paltz (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston)
New Paltz junior outfielder Fallon Spriggs batted .500 (10-for-20) with eight RBI, seven runs scored, four home runs and two doubles in a 5-1 week for the Hawks while establishing a single-season home run record (6). Spriggs also fashioned a 1.200 slugging percentage and posted a 1.000 fielding percentage in nine total chances. Spriggs went 1-for-3 with a double in a 6-1 game-one loss to SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday before bouncing back with a 3-for-4 performance that included two runs scored, one RBI and one home run in the Hawks' 4-2 game-two victory in eight innings. Spriggs hit 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored in a 14-5 game-one win over SUNY Potsdam on Friday before breaking out with a 2-for-5 game-two performance that included three RBI, three runs scored and two home runs in a 9-8 win in 10 innings. Her two home runs tied a single-game program record. After a hitless outing in two at-bats in an 8-4 game-one win over SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday, she rebounded by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one home run, one run scored and one double in a 5-4 game-two victory. On the season, Spriggs leads the SUNYAC in home runs (6) and slugging percentage (.736). New Paltz (12-7, 5-1 SUNYAC) is currently riding a five-game winning streak and returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, at 3 p.m. against Mount Saint Mary College in its 2015 home-opening doubleheader.

Oneonta (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial)
DeAngelis went 4-1 in five appearances, including four starts. In 26.2 innings pitched, she was charged with just six runs on 23 hits, while fanning 19 and walking four for a 1.58 ERA. She punched out a week-high seven against Potsdam on Saturday, including five looking. Opponents hit just .232 against her for the week.
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Benjamin Dunlavey (SR) Â
Cortland, Attack (Elmira, NY/Corning East)
Dunlavey helped lead the 13th-ranked Red Dragons to a pair of SUNYAC road wins last week as Cortland improved to 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. In an 11-9 victory at Geneseo on Wednesday, Dunlavey netted a career-high five goals on just six shots. He tallied the eventual game-winner in the fourth quarter. In a 15-9 win at Plattsburgh on Saturday, Dunlavey scored three of his game-high four goals in the first quarter as Cortland built a 12-3 lead at the half en route to the victory. For the two games, he scored nine goals on 12 shots and added two ground balls. For the season, Dunlavey has 23 points on a team-high 22 goals and one assist.
MEN'S LACROSSE GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Scott Tota (SR) Â

Tota raised his season record to 8-3 as he posted a pair of road conference victories in goal for the 13th-ranked Red Dragons last week. In an 11-9 win at Geneseo on Wednesday, Tota stopped 12 shots and recorded two ground balls. In a 15-9 triumph at Plattsburgh, he made 11 saves and allowed four goals in 53:02. For the week, he posted a 6.90 GAA, 23 saves and a .639 save percentage.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Emma Hayes-Hurley (SR)
Cortland, Midfield (Huntington, NY/Huntington)
Hayes-Hurley helped the #5 Red Dragons post a 3-0 record last week as they improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC. In a 20-7 win versus Oneonta on Tuesday, Hayes-Hurley totaled three goals and one assist and 11 draw controls. In a 17-1 victory versus Oswego on Saturday, she scored five points on four goals and one assist and added eight draws, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. She completed the week with three goals and one assist, eight draws, two ground balls and one caused turnover in a 14-8 triumph versus #10 Tufts on Sunday. For the week, she scored 13 points on 10 goals and three assists and recorded 27 draws, five ground balls and four caused turnovers.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Marissa Makar (SR)
Oneonta, Defense (Yorktown/Yorktown)
Makar lead the Red Dragons defense with 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers. The senior took control of five draws.

Brockport (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady Christian)
Samuel Taft dominated the group of other athletes competing at the Bill Butler Invite held at West Chester University. He won five of the 10 events for the decathlon on his way to finishing on top with a score of 6287 points, well above all other competitors.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Seth Allen (JR) Â
Plattsburgh (Burlington, Vt./Burlington HS)
In his first outdoor meet since 2013 at the Williams College Dick Farley Invitational on Saturday, Allen finished first out of 17 competitors in the javelin throw with a toss of 52.14 meters.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Abigail Boyce (SO) Â
Oswego (Lockport/Starpoint)
Boyce earned her first collegiate victory on Saturday at the teams Nazareth meet on Saturday. The junior crossed the finish line of the 100m hurdles in 16.27m, tying her career-best in that event. Boyce also earned a second place finish in the 4x100 running the third leg. her relay team would finish the race with a time of 50.97. In the field events, Boyce set a school record and took first place in the triple jump, recording a distance of 10.85 meters.
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Amanda Gadway (SR) Â
Plattsburgh (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy)
Gadway won three events at the Williams College Dick Farley Invitational on Saturday: The shot put (11.95m), discus throw (40.21m), and hammer throw (44.37m). All three distances surpass the ECAC qualifying marks.
