Annual Outdoor Track and Field Awards Announced
After a successful 2012 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship, four different schools came away with a major award. All six awards are voted on by the conference coaches.
Outstanding Male Track Athlete – Oneonta
Sean Bernstein (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker), junior
Bernstein won two individual titles and one relay at the 2012 SUNYAC Outdoor Championships to earn the Outstanding Male Track Athlete. He won both the 100 and 200-meter dashes and made it look easy in doing so. Bernstein finished the 100 meter in 10.67, the only competitor to finish sub-11 seconds. In winning the 200, he set an Oneonta facility record of 21.26. Bernstein ran the second leg of the 4x100 relay that finished in 42.27 seconds. He currently ranks eighth in the 100 nationally and is tied for third in the 200.
Outstanding Female Track Athlete – Buffalo State
Jazmin Dunham (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), sophomore
Jazmin Dunham was a three-time SUNYAC Champion en route to earning the Outstanding Female Track Athlete honor. Dunham successfully defended her title in the 100-meter hurdles (14.59) and the 200-meter dash (25.10). She also won the 100-meter dash (12.48). She currently ranks eighth nationally in the 100 hurdles.

Outstanding Male Field Athlete – Brockport
Dustin Colgan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), senior
Dustin Colgan was named the Outstanding Male Field Athlete following the 2012 Outdoor Championships. Colgan won the hammer throw with a toss of 50.10 meters (164’-4”), almost eight feet further than the runner-up, marking the seventh straight year a Brockport athlete has won the event. He also placed third in the discus with distance of 44.11 meters (144’-9”) and finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.52 meters (47’-7.75”).

Sarah Timmons (Schodack, NY/Maple Hill), senior
Timmons collected three SUNYAC titles over the weekend to earn Outstanding Female Field Athlete honors. She broke her own school record in winning the javelin with a distance of 38.21 meters (125'-4”). A highlight of the championship was winning the discus throw for a fourth time, making her only the fifth women's track & field athlete in SUNYAC history to capture a single event four times. She won the event with a toss of 42.52 meters (139’-6”). Timmons won the hammer throw with a mark of 48.95 meters (160’-7”) and placed seventh in the shot put (36’-3”). She currently ranks third nationally in the discus event.

Men’s Coach of the Year – Cortland
Steve Patrick
Steve Patrick was named the 2012 SUNYAC Men’s Coach of the Year as a result of the Red Dragons outstanding showing at the Championship Meet. Cortland won its 11th SUNYAC outdoor title and first since 2008. Patrick guided his men’s squad to 171.5 points to edge Geneseo (156.5 points). Cortland captured four individual crowns in addition to the winning 4x400 meter relay that set a SUNYAC meet and facility record. This is the second outdoor men’s coach of the year honor for Patrick.
