Student Athletes Receive Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence
Eight student-athletes from the State University of New York Athletic Conference were honored by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher with the 2012 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.
In addition to receiving the 2012 SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, all 257 students were recognized by Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. They were honored in a ceremony in Albany that was held on April 4.
“We’re proud to have these six students’ among those selected to receive this year’s Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence,” said SUNYAC Commissioner Dr. Patrick Damore. “Student success is our highest priority and this award is representative of the commitment made by conference member institutions and these students to achieving this goal.”
The SUNYAC student-athletes honored were:
Brian Duffy (Hilton, NY) – Brockport, men’s soccer
James Wangelin (East Otto, NY) – Buffalo State, cross country/track & field

“These proven leaders, athletes, artists and civic volunteers truly represent the power of SUNY” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “I congratulate all of the students being recognized and thank them for the positive impact each has had on New York State, our university system and the communities we serve.”
The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement. A selection committee, appointed by each college's president, nominates graduating seniors who meet the criteria. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor's Office for a second round of review before final recommendations are sent to the Chancellor.
Each recipient received a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.
