New Paltz and Cortland Earn Cross Country Athlete of the Week Honors
New Paltz junior Nicole Wischoff (Cooperstown, NY) and Cortland freshman Nick Marcantonio (Glens Falls, NY) both captured first-place finishes at their respective meets to help them earn the SUNYAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.
Wischoff helped her New Paltz squad to a first-place finish out of five collegiate opponents by taking the women’s individual title at the New Paltz Invitational at Bowdoin Park with a time of 21:54.15 in the 5,500 meter race. The junior outpaced her closest competition, Lauren Brunetto of SUNY Oneonta, by 46.39 seconds. The victory marked second week in a row that Wischoff has placed first individually. New Paltz returns to action on Friday, Sept. 23 at the Stevens Invitational.
Marcantonio debuted his college career in high fashion, picking up a win at the Hamilton College Short Course Invitational in Clinton, NY. He finished the 6,000 meter course in a time of 19:36.1 claiming the individual title in an 85-man race. The Red Dragons finished first out of eight teams at the meet as Cortland placed seven runners in the top 10. Cortland will compete at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational next Saturday, Sept. 17.
