Braun and Berube Race to Runner of the Week Honors
Plattsburgh’s Stefanie Braun and Geneseo’s Lee Berube have earned the final Runner of the Week honors of the 2011 season after winning the SUNYAC Cross Country Championship individual title on Oct. 29.
Braun won her first individual crown at the SUNYAC Championships as she helped lead Plattsburgh to a second place team finish with 53 points. She covered the 6k course in 22:39, ten seconds ahead of the next runners. Braun did not compete in the 2010 championship but placed in the top 15 the prior two years. Plattsburgh’s second place team finish is the best since 1999 when the Cardinals won the team title and snapped a five year string of third place (2006-2010).
Berube won his third straight individual championship in leading the Blue Knights to the team title at the SUNYAC Championships for the third consecutive year and 11th overall. The Knights finished with 17 points to runner-up Cortland with 60. The 17 points is the second best team finish in the history of the SUNYAC Championship as the Knights totaled a perfect score of 15 in 2003. Berube covered the eight kilometers in Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls in a time of 25:24, which was 27 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Berube’s individual win marks the third time in SUNYAC history an individual has won three straight (Bob Lalley, Cortland – 63, 64, 65 and Art Gunther, Binghamton – 90, 91, 92).
