SUNYAC selects weekly awards for winter sports
CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its weekly awards honoring 13 winter student-athletes.
MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Justin Ringen (JR) Â
Geneseo, Guard (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields)
Justin Ringen averaged 21.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in three road victories for Geneseo last week. He started with 17 points and nine rebounds in a 77-76 victory at Cortland on Tuesday, before pouring in 28 points, including 7-of-11 three-pointers, in an 87-80 win at Fredonia on Friday. He finished the week with 20 points (all in the second half) in a 79-72 win at Buffalo State.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Olivia Suhr (SR) Â
Brockport, Forward/Center (Rochester, N.Y./Marion)
Olivia Suhr led The College at Brockport Women's Basketball team to a 2-1 record on the week during conference play as the senior forward recorded a double-double in all three games. In three total games the Rochester, N.Y. native seized 45 total rebounds while scoring 55 points. Suhr posted numbers of 20 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and two blocks in a victory over Oswego, and a 25 point, 10 rebounds, four steals and a block in Brockport's second win of the season over Buffalo. Against Fredonia, Suhr produced 18 rebounds to pair with 10 points.
ICE HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Stephen Collins (JR)
Geneseo, Forward (Pittsford, N.Y.)
Stephen Collins scored seven goals in a 2-0-1 week for the Knights. He scored two goals in a 4-1 victory at No. 14 Neumann on Tuesday and added two more in a 5-5 home tie with Neumann on Saturday. In Saturday's 6-2 home win over Division II Franklin Pierce, Collins netted a hat-trick, including what proved to be the game-winning tally, to lead the way.
ICE HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Tim Kielich (FR) Â
Brockport, Forward (East Aurora, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres)
Tim Kielich scored two goals less than two minutes apart in a 7-0 win over Nazareth College night as the Golden Eagles went 1-0-0 on the week. The rookie took advantage of a five minute power play to net two goals and extend Brockport's lead in the second period.
ICE HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK – Cole Burack (FR)
Brockport, Goalie (Rockwall, Texas/New Hampshire Monarchs)
Cole Burack earned his first career shutout Saturday night as the Golden Eagles defeated Nazareth College 7-0. The Rockwall, Texas native was unstoppable in net, stopping 34 shots including 16 in the second period alone. Burack wasn't fazed by Nazareth's three power play opportunities, stopping all six shots during the six minute span.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK - Samantha Kowalewski (JR
Fredonia (Cowlesville, N.Y./Attica)
Samantha Kowalewski was the 1-meter winner Jan. 16 at Grove City with 240.95 points. She also finished second in the 3-meter with 257.95 points and was part of Fredonia's 200-yard freestyle relay which accounted for first-placing scoring.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Molly McCulloch (SO)
New Paltz, Fly/Sprint Free (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent)
New Paltz sophomore Molly McCulloch won two individual events and participated on four event-winning relays in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. She swam a 26.47 butterfly leg on the Hawks' first-place 200 medley relay (1:54.46) and a 25.71 leg on New Paltz's first-place 200 freestyle relay (1:42.72). Individually against Cortland, she touched first in the 50 freestyle (25.77) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.62). On Saturday in a victory against Mount Saint Mary College, McCulloch led off the 200 medley relay with a 29.66 backstroke split, helping the Hawks win the event in 1:54.15, and in the meet's final event, the 200 freestyle relay, she led off with a 24.47 and aided in the Hawks' pool-record time of 1:38.64. Her leadoff split serves as the second-fastest time in the 50 freestyle in the SUNYAC so far this season.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK -  Arron Carlson (JR) Â
Fredonia (LeRoy, N.Y./Notre Dame)
Arron Carlson was a double-winner Jan. 16 at Grove City with 307.45 points in the 1-meter and 337.20 points in the 3-meter. It was the third time this season he has won both boards at the same meet.
MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK - Reeve Callen (SR)
Cortland (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego)
Callen won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:19.18) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.71) in a home dual meet vs. New Paltz Friday. The following day at the five-team RPI Kumpf Invitational, he won the 50-yard freestyle (21.59) and swam the anchor legs on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:16.12) and runner-up 400-yard medley relay (3:44.49).
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Savannah Cook
Brockport (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West)
Senior Savannah Cook had an impressive weekend at the Rochester Institute of Technology Invitational earning two top three finishes. Cook set a personal record in the weight throw with a distance of 15.70-meters taking first place and qualifying for the ECAC's. The Corning, N.Y. native also took third in the shot put with a distance of 11.45-meters.
FEMALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Sara Rosenzweig (JR) Â
Geneseo (Merrick, N.Y./JFK Bellmore)
Junior Sara Rosenzweig won the 5,000-meter run to lead the Knights to first place out of 11 teams at the RIT Invitational, Saturday. Rosenzweig completed the event in 18:32.28 to take the crown and move into first place in the SUNYAC by 21 seconds.
MALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Ian Scheff (FR) Â
Oneonta (Sayville, NY/Sayville)
Ian Scheff won the triple jump and was second in the long jump at the Utica Invitational this past Saturday. In winning the triple jump, he recorded the third best distance all-time of 13.86 meters (45' 5 ¾"). He recorded a personal best mark of 6.43 meters (21' 1 ¼") in the long jump. His distance in the triple jump has him 13th nationally in Division III.
MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Joseph Carr (SR) Â
Oneonta (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa)
Joseph Carr led the way for the Red Dragons this past Saturday at the Utica Invitational with a pair of individual wins. Carr won both the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes with season best times. He crossed the line for the 60 in 7.06 seconds while crossing the line in the 200 in a time of 22.36 seconds. His time in the 200 is currently the fastest time in Division III this season.
